I am going to try to find a Toyota forum that is as helpful as this board is. But I thought I'd solicit some assistance from the folks here as well. Even though the vehicle under discussion is not a Dodge, it really doesn't matter to the outcome because its strickly ignition/sensor/cat related...

I have a 1997 Toyota Avalon (V6, auto) with 134,700 miles. Here is the background: I bought it in August 2002 with 62,000 miles. During the time between then and now I have not done *anything* engine related to it. OK, I have changed the oil and filters (air, oil) regularly. The plugs, wires, etc. that were in it when I bought it are still in there. And I have no idea how long they had been in there when I bought it. It starts and runs just fine.

Over the course of the last two months it has posted a P0420 MIL code a few times. I have reset it with my Superchips tuner. (Nice bonus prize!) This error translates to a loss of catalytic converter efficiency. Basically, the post-cat O2 sensor reading is closer to the pre-cat O2 sensor values than what the ECM would like. This could either mean the cat is going, or the sensor(s) are going.

Today I had it smogged and it still passed, but it was *at* the limit of the HC on the 15MPH test. On the 25MPH test the HC level dropped and was safely below the max level. All other measured levels of pollutants were well below the allowable limits.

My question to those that understand emissions testing and remediation: is something as simple as a tuneup going to improve my numbers, or do I have a sensor(s) or cat to replace sometime in the future?

If I had to guess, my numbers don't point to the cat going bad, as there is only one measurement that is high. And HC emissions are a result of bad combustion. Therefore, a tune-up (plugs, wires) are what I should pursue first.

I appreciate your time and assistance. Here are the numbers. (as with inserting tables into this web, they all get pushed way down the post...)

%CO2 %O2 HC (PPM) CO (%) NOX (PPM)

Hey thanks, Forseti. This is great reading, and makes perfect sense to me. It all fits: new plugs and wires look like it would do the trick. Hopefully, that will keep the P0420 from manifesting.
