Subject: Backfiring Problem Resolved ?? IP: Logged
Message: 1995 3.9L 4x4 auto.
I have a few other posts that describe in more detail my issues. But I'll let you search for those and just summarize what I replaced.
EGR - had holes causing a vacuum leak
TPS - voltage was out of spec
MAP - Voltage was out of spec
IAC - Replaced more as a precautionary measure
Tested fuel pressure at test port under hood, tested fine several times.
cap and rotor were replaced a couple of months before issue began. Inspected and determined both were good.
Checked spark with in-line spark tester (kind with light). In doing so, pulled metal connector out of one wire when pulling wires off spark plug. Replaced plug wires under lifetime warranty (installed new wires / plugs late last year). Also checked spark plugs, replaced 1 that was fouled (thinking this was the one that was causing the backfiring).
Took truck in to shop who found bad distributor pick up and weak coil. Shop replaced distributor pickup, I replaced coil.
After doing all of the above truck ran fine for a few days then started backfiring when cold. Also temps in morning got colder and that was when truck would backfire. Truck would run fine after it warmed up.
Took truck back to shop, they could not find any issues.
Noticed on my way home that the temp gauge was not moving. Drove truck for about 30 minutes, temp gauge was barly off cold. Went to Advance, picked up new coolant temp sensor. Started truck back up, temp gauge moved to about halfway (where it should have been). Replaced the Coolant Temp sensor and truck has ran 2 days without backfiring on my way to work (monday temp was 37, temp this morning was 28).
I think that's everything I have done. Hope this helps some of you.
