Subject: M1 install, RTV, and coolant IP: Logged
Message: hello all, This is my first post but I have been lurking for quite some time. I can't emphasize how much this site has helped me. Now for the questions:
I am in th process of installing the M1 manifold on my 5.2L. Is ot ok to use Red RTV for the gaskets? Also, can anyone provide any more detail on where to apply the rtv.
I drained the radiator by removing the lower radiator hose from the radiator ... how much coolant do I need to refill to spec ... I splashed a bit and didn't neasure the quantity coming out. Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: Use RTV for the end gaskets instead of the rubber ones. But use a real intake manifold gasket for the head-intake seal. Put a little bit of RTV around the water ports. Not much, just a little.
Hard to say how much water you lost, probably not much. 3-4 qts would be a good guess. Doesn't really matter much, though. Take a guess, or pre mix your water/anti-freeze.
While you're in there, be sure and dril a 1/8-3/16" hole in your thermostat base plate. That will make filling and purging effortless.
