Subject: Think it's blown? IP: Logged
Message: Help! 95 Dakota ext. 4x4 with 3.9 litre and a little over 150,000 miles. I'm driving down the road and the oil warning light came on, which I've never seen before. Figuring I'm low on oil, I made a mental note to check in the next town. Before I got there, it started getting rather noisy and losing power. By the time I was somewhere I could stop (5 to ten miles) it was really noisy and barely running. The oil was a little low, but not significantly.
My Dakota has been good to me and I've been good to it, with regular oil and filter changes,, plugs, etc. I am afraid I've ruined the engine which seems shouldn't have happened with this few of miles. Is it possible the oil pump just stopped working, therefore causing the noises... or do you think I've burned it up? I'm not too mechanically inclined, so is there an easy way to find out?

Message: have you tried to start it again? does it run?
you really should have shut it down when the light came on.

Message: sounds like you better start looking for a new engine.
may i ask a question? if you were " good to it" how'd you let it get low enough on oil to kill it?

Message: The light ment you had low or no oil pressure, and the noise from the engine comfirms that it wasnt just a sending unit problem. My guess would be oil pump failure. At the least you cut thouands of miles off the engine lifes, at worst your looking at a rebuild. First step drop the pan and see what you find. Look for metal shavings. Replace the pump and put the pan back on. Disconnect the coil and crack the engine till you get pressure, then reconnect and see if it will start. If it actually starts and sounds alright, let it run for for awhile, and then change the oil and filter.

Message: It was less than a quart low, Daddio and it's never used oil and I change it every 3-4 thousand miles. As I said, the oil light coming on was even new to me. That's why I started thinking the oil pump may have triggered the light, and am really trying to look at this glass as half full. I'm afraid that even if it was just the pump, my inability to get pulled over probably compounded my problems 20 fold.

Message: Its also possible that your oil pump screen was clogged. Sometimes the powder coat on the oil pan comes off and cloges it. Its also possible that the oil filter cloged aswell.

Message: as mattleg stated, you're best bet would be to drop the pan and take a look at everything. hopefully you haven't spun a bearing. if you haven't you could probably clean the pick up screen, change the pump and bearings and be good to go. i wish you luck and hope it's not dead for good.

Message: it doesn't take much to stop the oil pump from spinning. like they stated the pick up screen could of been clogged. drop the pan like they stated and take a look and replace the oil pump even if it is good. i hope the 3.9 keeps kicking...:(

Message: id bet oil pump is shot not clogged. these 3.9's and 5.2's are notorious for oil pump failures.
