Subject: '97 Dakota ABS/brake light on IP: Logged
Message: I took it to a local repair shop and they said only the dealer has the diagnostic code for it. They tested the continuity and said it is NOT the sensors, and that it is either the ABS pump or controller. I only have ABS that came standard with it, and wonder if any of you can give me ballpark figures for what each (controller and pump) will cost me at the dealer. Or should I get it diagnosed at the dealer like I have to, but have someone else do the work since the dealer is relatively more expensive?

Message: I remember several posts on here about your ABS/brake light comming on for a different reason then the ABS pump and maybe it was the controller. Anyways there are several posts on this website about it. Even telling you where the part is that you have to replace.

Message: If you wanna know parts prices, just call the dealer. Anything ABS is gonna be expensive. I would find a good independant shop to figure out whats wrong, then get the parts at the dealer and replace them yourself.

Message: It could also be a leaky brake line.

Message: The local repair shop told me that in '97 Dakotas, only the dealer can tell me what is wrong with it. I just hope they don't BS me and tell me it is something major when it isn't so they can make more money off me. My experiences have been pretty bad for honesty.
Even with the light on, will the brakes work ok? That is to say, just the ABS feature doesn't work but the brakes should be working ok? Just curious in case it is real expensive to fix. I might just drive it as is if it isn't dangerous.

Message: Hmm no independant shop. Well before you take it to the dealer try bleeding the brakes, you will need an assistant to do it properly. Follow the instructions in a shop manual if you have one. Might as well try the simple easy stuff first.
