Subject: Oil Pump and Rear Main Seal IP: Logged
Message: I have a leaking timing cover seal at the crank pulley, or as some might call front main seal. I also think the oil pan is leaking up there aswell. So I have decided to drop the oil pan. I read through the haynes book for doing this. Seems simple enough. However the time required to do this has tempted me to replace both the oil pump and the rear main seal while I have it off. The oil pump seems pretty simple, it just bolts right up. However the rear main seal is kinda scary to me. I gotta remove the rear main cap, to get the bottom half of the seal. Then loosen atleast one maybe two more main caps. Just enough that the crank flexes and lets loose of the top part of the seal. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions that might aid me in this little project. Its a 5.9 just for reference.

Message: Replacing the rear main seal is a royal pain in the behind. If it's not leaking, leave it alone.
But do replace the oil pump and drive shaft while you're in there. They are cheap, it's easy, and I can't think of a good reason not to.

Message: Great ideas!
Except:
The most thorough way to do this, in my opinion, might be to carefully remove all the caps (rods and mains, make sure you mark them in some way so they go back in the same!) and then lower the crankshaft enough to get at both halves of the seal. The dealership did my 99's rear main while it was still under warranty, but I'm not sure how they did it. They may have used one of those "chinese finger trap" type tools, 'cause I know they didn't disturb much. On the pump driveshaft; I think you must also have the distributor out, since the shaft has the gear on top of it and must come out from the top. Is this right, anyone? If you do it the above way, you can inspect or replace the bearings, too! Just remembered though, you'd prolly also have to deal with whatever bolts to the rear of the crank (flexplate or flywheel, etc.).
Or, you could just do like .boB said, and not replace the rear main :-)
It would be very cool to use a new pickup screen with that new pump, too...
Sorry for the long-winded post, but maybe it helped you make up your mind? :-)

Message: Thanks for the response guys. I think Im gonna leave the rear seal as you suggested. From experinece in the past I have learned that sometimes the orginal might last longer than a new poorly installed one.
As for the pump Im going with a 25% higher flow than orginal, I think it comes with new screen, and if not I will buy one. I think im gonna strip the paint off the inside of the pan aswell, just to be sure I never get paint clogging the screen.
You suggested replacing the pump shaft, but I can't find much in the manual about it. As far as I know the oil pump shaft is the distro shaft and Im not gonna pull that unless I have to. I doubt the shaft would break its under very little load for it size.

Message: Does anyone know if you can remove the oil pan on a 5.9 2WD without lifing the engine as the haynes manual says.
