Subject: Tranny Flush vs. Pan fluid change? IP: Logged
Message: I just got back from a local transmission shop and asked the guy about getting a transmission flush so I could get the fluid totally swapped out with AMSOIL Universal ATF. He was steadfast in saying that I didn't need a flush and I just needed the fluid in my pan change.
Doesn't that just defeat the purpose of a total fluid change in a tranny? Aren't you just mixing in the old junk with the new junk if you just change the fluid in the pan? I'd change the filters in both cases.
I think the guy was just filling me full of crap because he was acting like he didn't even want to do it since I was going to provide my own fluid. If a flush is indeed what I need to do, what are some "big name" places that have the equipment to do a flush?
Any clarification on this stuff is appreciated, folks. Thanks!

Message: I did a fluid drain and filter change on my 2000 R/T (46RE Tranny). It was messy but not too bad. Anyway, it turned out that while my truck was jacked up and supported in the front, that all the fluid from the cooler and torque converter drained out as well. So my pan almost was too small. Luckily I had a large drip pan under it. You might consider trying that. If you decide to do it yourself post a message and I'll give you the torque values from the OEM service manual. Also make sure you get the filter and seal from Mopar.

Message: What about manual trannies. UP till about two months ago I have only owned automatic, so I do not really know any thing about the maitnence of a manual. How often do you have to change the fluid?

Message: Manuals are easy. Look in the owners manual for maintenance schedules and fluid types. It varies depending on what you're doing with the truck. Changing fluid is easy. Get it warm, drain, refill. Simple. No filter, lines, gaskets, etc to worry about.

Message: the Pep Boys near me told me they only do a tranny flush, no straight tranny fluid changes. guy said theres no reason to offer both when the flush is the one you should get anyway.

Message: Thanks for the info .boB Unfortunatlly my truck did not come with an owners manual, but my local dealer should be able to give me all of that info too I believe. Does any body know where I can get an onwers manual for a 99? Will the dealer carry them from that far back or do I have to start searching ebay?

Message: If they do a complete job, drop the pan, change the filters, filler it back up, then flush out the rest of the old fluid,,, you will be just fine.
The problem is, the quickie lube places say it's not required to replace the filters, just hook up thier flushing machine and back flush the filters. Now you have all the crap that was stuck in your filters floating around in your tranny :-(
If they don't drop the pan and change the filters don't let them do the tranny flush.
