Subject: 2000 4x4 Transfer Case Shifter
IP: Logged

Message:
Greetings!

I have a 2000 Dakota 4x4, 4.7L 5 speed auto, manual transfer.

After a bit of pulling this weekend, I shifted from 4L into 2H as usual. A few minutes later, I went to re-engage 4L and found that my 4x4 transfer shifter was now "free." I can literally tap it with my finger and it will slide from top to bottom without a single hint that it may be attached to anything giving the least bit of resistance.

I'm guessing I sheared a pin somewhere in the linkage.

What's my best shot at getting access to look at the linkage to see what's up? Or is this something that's better left to a real mechanic? I pulled out the console, but the shifter seems to be one large brick that I'm not sure I want to remove.

Thanks!
