Subject: Accel spark plug wires are crap IP: Logged
Message: I bought the TST10 tune-up kit from Accel.
One of the wires disconnected from the metal plug/boot connection. Accel replaced the wire. It took them a month, but they did replace it. So that was nice.
But...
I noticed by chance that a boot was arcing to the heat shield. And it was doing that on 4 cylinders.
WTF?
So I got some 3M rubber tape and regular 88 tape.
I did one lab of rubber and 2 laps of 88 tape.
No more arcing.
But I should not have had to do that.
No more Accel products for me.

Message: Now I have to see if the tape can take the HEAT.
Which wires do you guys recommend for the V6?
Thanks

Message: I use the autolite OEM wires (7MM) in my dakota. In troubleshooting my backfire issue, I pulled the wires and one of them broke. The metal connector stayed on the plug while the boot pulled off. They had been on for over a year and around 13k miles. I called advance where I purchased them and they had a set in stock. They told me to bring in the entire set and they would swap them. Very easy, same day and painless. The way the limited lifetime warranty should work.

Message: I read on here about the heat shields.
I'll remove them as soon as it gets above 45 degrees.
Dan M,
That's the good part about buying local.
Did you know that Advance can give you a total $ you have spent on items for which you gave your phone number? Phone number = warranty items.
Anyone have an idea of the temperature around the spark plugs?

Message: I used to have Jacobs plug wires on mine (they came with my "Pro Street" ignition kit) for 'bout a year-and-a-half until two of them started arcing to the valve cover. Wanted more blue wires, so: I picked up a set of Moroso "Ultra 40" universal wires (with fiberglass/silicone sleeving!) and cut 'em to fit. If you ever see pictures in the catalogs of them, that's exactly how mine look! Technically, they're "race" wires; but so far no static or noise in my stereo, and only 40 ohms per foot! They look cool and work great, but kinda expensive...
BTW, my '72 Swinger has Accel Super Stock Spiral Core on it, so far so good... bummer to hear about your trouble!

Message: P.S. I pulled out the plug shields in July '99 with 2500 miles, so those were never an issue for me... still got 6 shiny new ones-- anyone interested? Just joking!
