 Subject: Only 4 quarts

Did my first oil change on my dak today. It only took 4 quarts for a 3.9L can that be right? Dipstick reads full, and the pressure gauge is where it allways was, but I find this hard to believe because my old car with a 3.0l v6 took 5 quarts. The only motors that I have seen take 4 quarts are like civics, and crap like that.

I had a 90 with 3.9 V6 (great engine) and it took
4.5 quarts with filter.
Check your owners manual if you have it. You can
also check those quick lube places.
Off hand I forget the Fram oil filter number
you're suppose to use but *maybe* the last owner
of your truck put the wrong filter on and it's
half the length of the one that's suppose to be
in there thus for the 1/2 quart less to top it
off. Double check you are using correct filter.
Let us know what you find out...

yep, 4 quarts is right. I have a 95 3.9L and it takes 4 quarts.

99 3.9, takes 4 qts.
dealer oil changes always gave me a reciept that showed 5 qts. found out later that their oil change price include UP TO 5 qts, and I really only take 4.

Thanks I feal better now. I know that it is the right filter I just told the store the year and engine size, and they gave me this one. I opted for the puralator. I have heard good things about that brand.

One more question. I did not get an owners manual with the truck are you guys using 5w30 or 10w30. In the winter it can get down to 0 degrees occaisanally but not usually less then 20 degrees. I have allways used 10w 30 in the past, with no problems on start up.

Your engine needs only enough oil so the oil pump pick-up never gets uncovered, not an ounce more. You’d be surprised how little an engine can run on. Some racers have raced with three qts before and have heard rumors of racers successfully using even less. If pan manufacturers would stop “rating” their pans this way, the confusion would eventually end. Most wet-sump engines are perfectly safe at five quarts.
