I was at my stealership yesterday and it's a different one from the one I usually go to. I saw a sign hanging above the door that recommends a diff fluid change ever 20,000KM. However my other stealership that I usually go to never suggested anything like that. Just wondering what you guys usually do.

Yep, my owner's manual says to change the diff fluids every 20,000km too. Was somewhat surprised at that until I did it. Seemed to me there was condensation in the diffs that caused water to form in them. I don't off-road so it was not a deep water thing. The only thing that really bugs me is the fiddle it is to reach all the bolts on the pan of the front diff. I see no reason why they can't install drain and fill plugs on those things. That's about the only good thing about my old GMC. Just unscrewed the plug and let it drain, metal chips and all came out.

If you have a 2WD, then the rear diff is easy to do, but again plugs would help quicken the job.

some people takes a vacum pump to drain their front diff. not as good as taking the pan off but better than just leaving it in. I am quite sure this is what the dealership does when they change the fluid. think they would take your pan off ha ha.

Well crap. Because I take my truck into the dealership for oil changes because it's still under warranty. Every 5000k it goes in there. I always say it's here for scheduled maintenance and they never EVER told me about the diffs. I used to take my manual in to get validated. But they told me I didn't need the book and they never stamped it. BAST#RDS!

According to my manual (for 2002), the 12,000 mile diff change requirement is only for "severe" service.

So depending on your use, you may be just fine.

Yah, well I wouldn't consider two wheel drive in Alberta (FLAT) Severe use. So I Hope I'm fine. Either way looks like a good excuse to switch over to synthetic. LOL..
