Subject: Major radiator problems...

1995 CC, 3.9 auto, 80k miles...

I started my truck up in the school parking lot, everything was fine, then i drove the 9 mile journey to my buddys house so i could drop him off (just highway miles). So i dropped him off, and we could smell antifreeze, my gauges said everything was normal so i thought nothing of it, but when i went to drop my second buddy off, there was antifreeze leaking out of the radiator, the cap and around the top of it, and the gauge was almost pointing all the way to H. we have been experiencing some really cold winter weather lately (coldest this week was -7F). my dad mentioned it could be a crappy thermostat.
i wasnt driving like a madman or anything, could someone tell me what happened? why it happened, and what i should do about it?

the engine is probably O.K considering they use cast iron for just about everything on those engines. the thermostat could be the problem and you should take it out and inspect it. if the cap blow off or was no good than that could also be the problem. i bet the cap is bad and it was slowly leaking the antifreeze freeze out onto the slowly warming engine which was giving of the smell of burning anti. when the engine reach 180 degrees or so the coolant start boiling it's way out through the cap. therefore low on coolint means engine running hot. replace cap and fill the radiator back up, than you should be good to go.

[ and some mods to blow it up]

Be sure you use a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water > As a rule thermostates stick open but on rare ocation they can stick closed causing over heating > Try a new cap first after filling the radiator > just let it sit and idle to see if it over heats > This prevents you from getting stranded out on the road > Also gives you the opertunity to watch for further leaks > Good luck

So many problems > So little time
