 Subject: shifting hard

Ok this is not about a dakota but its about my friends 1992 chevy silverado. Does anyone know why it shifts really hard in the cold like you could be driving and then out of no where second gear hits and its like wam it kicks your head back but still going same speed and its an automatic. thanks

Modulator valve, possibly, or does it need a flush, filter and fluid job?
Otherwise buy a Dodge. I had a 88 GMC 4x4 from new -- biggest piece of junk I ever owned.
