Subject: 44RE lost 3rd gear
IP: Logged

Message:
So I was driving to work this morning (very cold, about 2 degrees) and after driving about 10 minutes (engine and tranny were warm) I accelerated from a stop and found that my tranny would not shift from 2nd to third. 1st to 2nd shifted fine, but engine would rev up to near redline and not shift to 3rd.

Any suggestions. Sensor bad? Need to adjust bands? Need a total rebuild? I've heard that this tranny is notorious for losing 3rd gear, hope I don't need a rebuild. Any help would be great.

are you sure 3rd gear is out? wait a few days and see if this odd behavior continues. i think it could have been cause it was cold outside and the trannys doesn't warm like the truck engine does.

and some mods to slow it down!

Hey kaderdak,
Do you have a TransGo Shift kit or something else made by transgo. I have the same truck as you, and I was curious about a shift kit. What series: street,semi-racing,full-racing and what model shift kit did you get?
Thanks

Yeah, 3rd gear is definitely gone. Heck, sometimes even 2nd is as well. Even if I manually shift the tranny into 2nd, sometimes it will downshift to 1st, even under very light throttle, and won't shift back up to 2nd. It's acting really bizarre.

It's going to the tranny shop tomorrow. Hopefully they'll tell me something like the bands need adjusted, speed sensors' bad, etc. I really don't want to pay for a rebuilt.

if 1st gear revs really high before shifting under light throttle than you are missing gears or 2nd gear. if any gear is revving high than normal than that is a sign there is a gear missing.

Mine did the opposite. It would upshift fine, but when I would stop, it would not downshift into low gear. Had to do it manually. It ended up being a solonoid inside the transmission, luckilly it was covered under warranty and they changed the fluid and filter at the same time for no charge.

You know I had the same problem with my transmisson. As soon as I added in some ATF +3 then it did shift right but done it in a harsh way. Also not to mention my tranny use to start out in 3rd gear.
