Message: For those of you who know, or have a yellowtop... which model of
yellow top fits under the hood of a 99 dakota? There seem to be a
few different models based on size of the yellow tops, smaller
being more expensive, and I'd like to have the lesser expensive one
fit haha... thanks!

Message: What is the battery y'all have?
The Optima red or yellow top?
Or is there another popular brand?
I'm in the market, and was wondering if the Optimas are worth the premium price.
Thanks

Message: The big advantage to the Optima (IMO) is that it can withstand a lot of physical abuse without leaking. I have one in my Cobra kit for exactly that reason, because it sits right over the passengers feet.
A secondary advantage is that it has a large electrical reserve. If you occasionally place a heavy load (like a winch), it could be helpfull. If you frequently place a heavy load, you should upgrade the alternator and not the battery.

Message: I have the 800cca/1000ca red top, and it is enough for my system (and no its not a little wussy system :-). It seems to hold a good amount of reserve. Obviously it wont have as large of a reserve as the yellow top, but when the red top is under $100 and the similar yellow top is $150, it just wasn't worth spending the extra money for my application.

Message: i have a red top that i bought 4 years ago for my jeep. at the time i had a system in the jeep and we would run my system while we were partyin around a campfire and whatnot. i tried to kill that battery by running my system all nite and not starting my jeep until the morning. well the next morning, i would walk out to my jeep (or stumble depending on how good the party was), turn the key, and it would fire right up. you just cant kill those farkers. it is still in my jeep even though the transmission hasnt been for 4 months now. it will fire right up whenever i want it to. i am thinking about putting it in my truck since my battery is still the factory one and has seemed a little weak in the mornings lately since it has been getting colder. this morning, my door was frozen shut and i live in georgia. anyways, optima batterys are definately worth the money invested. just my .02 cents.
GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON custom 48mm tb, tps @ .768, relocated IAT, 180 t-stat, autolite double platinum, taylor wires, flowmaster 40 delta flow single in/dual out, CAI

Message: I had a red top for 9 yrs. Until it was cracked in half in a crash.I was going to go with the yellow top but was told that the yellow top last by half of what the red will last. Either way Optima is the only way to go if you are looking for a tuff battery that will almost always outlast a liquid filled battery. Mine was 9 years old when it died and the only reason it did was because I could not turn the lights out.It lasted for 2 more days.

Message: When I worked at autozone I was able to get a hold of a used optima for $20. I have kept it around for about 4 years now, as a spare, and it hasn't let me down yet. It has been placed in about 4 other cars, with no problems. I waiting for my international battery to die so I can put it in my truck.

Message: If an Optima is classified as a lead acid battery, then the answer is no, if it is completely drained, it is dead for good. But it is still worth a try to trickle charge it according to the instructions to your battery charger.
I really don't know anything about them though.

Message: Yeah, I just looked them up. Optima batteries do use an absorbed glass mat as a part of the battery, but they are still lead acid batteries.
Once it is completely dead, there is no bringing it back just like regular lead acid batteries from what I can tell.

Message: sid vic, if you're depending on your battery to run your extra electric load, you've made a big mistake. The battery is to start the car. Period. That's all it's supposed to do, technically. With the engine running, you should be able to remove the battery from the car and everything will still work correctly.
Another function that it's not really designed for (but we do it anyway) is run high amp loads for short periods of time. Like a winch. Or auxillary equipment when the engine is off. Now it also has to keep the computer and radio settings alive, and recharge our cell phones when the engine is off.
If you're running a lot of high amp equipment, you should have a high amp alternator to feed it. If you don't, you'll lead your battery towards an early demise. That's why your Optima only lasted 3 years. With that kind of usage your cheap PB battery won't last long, either.

Message: bob I've done that in a severe pinch. "jump started" a car by placing a good battery in and removing it while the car was running and putting the dead one in.
Not something I'd recommend, but did come in handy one cold dark indiana night.
