04 QC 4.7 62,000 Miles
Sometime when my Dak is not driven for a couple of days the transmission will slip for a few seconds.
Today after not driving the truck for 3 days the transmission slipped for about a half mile before I could get up to speed. The fluid level is ok.
No abnormal sound.
What could be the problem here?

TIA,
Pete

When you checked the fluid level, did you do it with the engine on and in netural? Most people make the mistake of checking it in park and should be done in neutral?

My '04 Dakota CC 4X4 4.7L sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to engage one I put in drive or reverse. It's almost like the torque converter has to pump up with ATF before it will engage. It doesn't slip at all after it engages, and it doesn't do this all the time (somewhat infrequently) It usually does this if the truck has been left standing more than 12 hours.

I have checked the fluid level when it's warm, and it is O.K. Someone on this board said that they thought it was the torque converter draining ATF back into the transmission while it is sitting. Don't know if this describes what you're experiencing. Anyone have any thoughts?

try some lucas oil transmission additive in it. my sisters '96 jeep grand cherokee was doing the same thing that your truck is doing and we used the lucas oil in it. after that, it did not slip at all.

From my experience Mopar trannys are quite particular. I tried aftermarket fluid, filter and additive and my tranny started to slip.

Now all I use is Mopar ATF +4, Mopar filter, and absolutely no additives. For price I would like to use other stuff, but a tranny is an expensive thing to replace. Now the tranny doesn't slip.

Have you replaced any hoses lately?
There is an anti-drainback valve in one of the trans cooler hoses.
I replaced that line with a plain hose, and I have a slight delay too.
I usually put it in neutral while the truck warms up for several seconds.

My 2001, 4.7 does the same thing. Sits for a day or so, crank it up, put in in reverse and it works fine, back out of the driveway, put it in drive and it slips like a dog. Drive a block or so and then you feel it grabbing and off you go. Dealer checked 3x while it was under warranty and naturally it wouldn't do it (or so they say, I'm getting to where I don't like Dodge dealers). It does it like 2-3x per month. Sometimes you can let it sit for a week and it'll work perfectly when driven. Other times, over night is enough, BUT NEVER will it slip in the same day of driving.

So its not fluid, its intermittant and always occurs after its sits for a long while.

There is a TSB from Chrysler about this concern. The TSB explains a concern with the internal cooler return filter inside the transmission pan. The filter is the small screw-on filter. If the filter has the part number 4799662AB. This filter is considered suspect because it may allow fluid to drain back out of the torque convertor and over a period of time after sitting it is leading the driver to believe the transmission is slipping. Use PN 4799662 or any filter without the AB suffix.
