Message: Best engine by far is the Ford 4.9 straight six. They run hundreds of thousands of miles. I have one now with 274,000 and still going (not strong but still going). My Dodge 4.7 is pretty good but it has to prove itself. I hear they are sludge builder sand need to be engine flushed every now and then.
Worst -- early eighties MAZDA 2 liter. I ran one for 90,000 miles and it has such low compression that it wouldn't even idle.

Message: the 2.8 gm is by far a piece of sh!t but, not the worst engine either. i had one with 215,000 on and and the only reason it blew up is cause i wheeled the hell out of the truck. a 2.8 well maintained and not beaten on could easily run 300k. anyways the ford 4.9 was not the best engine imo.

Message: The ford 4.9 will last a while but anyone who thinks its in the same longevity class as the 318 isnt all there. Why do you think the #1 most used and sought after derby motor is the 318? Cuz they take the heat very well and fire up and run just as well when cherry hot. i've seen 318s start dieseling before and running full throttle after the guy's driveshaft fell out, and the motor started back on it's own, and it didn't blow up, it was going like that for about 20 min until after the heat, and he ripped the coil wire off, and this year he had the same motor in a car. The 3.9/5.2 is prob the longest lasting gas motors sitting next to the 225 slant six.

Message: The Dodge 318's are the most notorious block for being able to take the most abuse.
"..Though the 318's performance came between the GM 305 and 350, it never seemed to have the oil-burning and smoke-producing qualities of those engines. Like the slant six, the 318 has shown itself capable of great abuse at the hands of those non-oil-or-air-filter-changing folk who so often end up behind the wheels of Mopar cars and light trucks.."

Message: You guys crack me up. OK the 318 is a super motor. Alot of cities even used it in taxis and cop cars. Yes its a great motor. But I heard a true story of a 4.9 that was droped off at a garage in Southern California. The garage was changing the oil and flushing the radiator. Owner came and picked it up a day later, paid his bill and took off across Death Valley. Hour or so later noticed the oil pressure was pretty low, so he slowed down to 75 or so from 90 mph. Other side of the desert stopped at a gas station and asked the attendant to put a quart in. Attendant checked and said there's no oil at all in this motor and no water in the radiator. OK maybe that never really happened, but it could have.

Message: That would NEVER happen. Not to ANY engine LOL!
225/318 ARE probably the best. The Chevy 2.8 CARBED version in early '80's FWD cars about the worst!
Well, them weird 4 banger in old FWD AUdi's used to be well known to crack the block too. Don't forget THAT pos.
Ford 300 six shooter, 302/251W were also some very high lasting, abuse taking engines too.
But we're talking about the WORST in this thread. I sticking to the 2.8 V6 FWD carbed chevy engine as the POS gutless wonder!

Message: not bad fed for driving 110mph. lol
i heard a guy in a 225ci slant six did a 500mile road trip with no coolant and the engine keep working even after they put the coolant in it. i wonder if the new 5.7/4.7/3.7 will live up to the reliability of the previous engines???
[ and some mods to blow it up]
