Subject: Slight grinding noise !! HELP
IP: Logged

Message:
I had a rancho 3" suspension lift installed.
about 2-3 days later I started hearing a slight
grinding noise at the left front , it's always
present, the noise don't get louder when speed
increases, but it does get alittle louder in
turns ,exspecially tight turns and I noticed
a squeak in the left front also.
I am running 32x11.50 tires on 15x8 rims, it's
possible that they are rubbing in the tight turns
but the noise is ALWAYS present.
Could it be the CV joints or maybe the front
left brakes are draging slightly? , or simply that
the left front suspension is loose at some
spot. My truck also pulls to the left when I
brake hard and vibrates at highway speeds.
H-E-L-P !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The vibration is probably a tire that has thrown a weight and needs to be rebalanced. The cv joints or the brakes dragging could be the noise your hearing but the pulling to one side when braking is definitely the brakes. The squeak could be from the front sway bar bushings. They tend to start squeaking with age. The ones on our 99 Durango 4x4 have a lovely squeak to them at times. I doubt your tires are rubbing. Jack the truck up, take the front tires off and check everything under the front end. Look for anything that seems loose or any wear marks anywhere. If you cant find anything, then take it to wherever you had the lift installed and explain the situation to them. Ask if they would mind double checking that everything is torqued down properly. A good shop will. Then get all your tires rebalanced and have a brake shop check out your brakes. You can check the pads yourself. Just look at them when you take the front tires off and make sure there is plenty of pad left on both sides of the rotor on each side of the truck. Also look at your rotors. Feel of them and make sure there is no obvious deformity to them. If there is just some minor warpage you probably wont be able to tell just by looking and feeling, a brake shop will have to check them for that. Once you have done all that and ruled out those areas, if the problems still exist, you may have to start looking in other areas such as a warped front or rear drive shaft causing the vibration.

thanks, the reason I think the tires are rubbing is when I back up and turn, ( like backing
out of my driveway ) , the grinding noise is
very loud ,sorta sounds like hard plastic being
dragged on pavement ,again it only seems to be
coming from the left front, any clues?

Have to get someone to drive the truck for you and have them back up or whatever while stand outside and look around. Just be VERY careful if you have to get really close to the tires when looking. Make sure that someone is behind the wheel who will listen to you and pay attention to what you are telling them to do. It could be a tire rubbing somehow but I really didnt think that with the 3 inch lift 32's would be rubbing since my 32's didnt rub with no lift. Anything is possible though. Also check the boots on your cv joints.

Was the truck quiet from the lift installer? Noise just started a few days later? My guess is they didn't have something tightened properly. I would absolutely go back to the installer and have them go through it with a fine tooth comb!!

If you find out it's a wheel backspacing issue, please let me know! Cuz those are the wheels I have too and don't wanna run into anything "unexpected" when I throw them on my truck!

Good luck, Mike!

Actually the problem started when I had the
32's installed,( at least I didn't notice it
till then ), the truck was sitting on a
slight grade inside the shop, when the dude
started jacking up my truck he started on the
high side of the floor,(passenger side), and each time the truck lifted it would slide alittle towards the low side of the floor ,(drivers side)
I'm wondering if maybe
he accidently bent or mis-algined something.

Blizzard........ I do have rubbing, but only
in reverse and only when I'm lock to lock,
and oddly enough the left front rubs more
than the right front....hopefully I will
"cure" that when I install the 2" body lift.
