Subject: Qestion on Alignment

Message:
Currently I have my 99 Dakota 5.2 SLT at a stealership for an alignment (believe it or not they were the cheapest in town).

Well, after haggling over the price of the alignment from $110 to $69.95 they call and tell me the price has jumped to $149.

Here's what happened...

Backing and turning out of the driveway this morning and heard a loud bang. I continued up the road to discover that my truck now pulls to the left (bad pull). I took the front tires off the do a quick inspection and find nothing out of kilter. So, narrowing the possabilities down to alignment related issues I took the truck in.

Now, the dealer, sorry, stealer calls and says both my control arms are lose and my tires, when elevated, are sloped inward. That's how they justified the extra price on the alignment.

Anyone care to comment on this? Is my wallet getting pinched here for a typical alignment or am I just not up to speed enough on the working of my front end?

Thanks,

ZoSo

SCREWED. I pay $73 for alignment. Where are you? I'm in Michigan and most shops around here are high. If $110 is the cheapest, they are overcharging. If the control arm bushings are shot, maybe. Get the computer readout from the alignment machine and see for yourself how far out of whack it is. Any reputable shop will show you the values and the correct specs for your vehicle.

i thought tires always slop inward when jacked up. it cost me $65 at sears.

so unless they need to change parts on the truck. then they should honor the original price quoted. never take your truck to the stealership. i would pick the truck up and take it to sears

With unequal length control arms, the front wheels are only vertical at one point in their arc of travel. That point is typically when the upper control arms are parallel with the road.
Since our upper control arms are shorter than the lower control arms, when the front suspension is at full extension (droop) or compression, the top of the tires will be closer to the center of the vehicle than the bottom.
