Why do my front brakes brake more than my rear ones? I have abs on the back and have put on new pads and drums and bled the lines. I have heard that there is a proportioning valve on the system, could that be the problem?

because thats how its set up to work. also disk brakes has better stopping power than drums. as long as your rears work. I wouldnt worry about it

In almost every car made the front brakes do 70% - 80% of the braking. Thus the pads wear quicker, also often the discs( in 4 wheel disc cars) are larger than the rears to offset this.
Vehicles are designed that way because of the physical dynamics involve when a 3-4 thousand pound vehicle is undergoing deceleration.

But if I am sitting on slippery ground stopped, my back tires will still spin. I have to push on the petal harder to get them to stop to. If I am sitting at a light, I can feel them slip.

Now that's odd.

I'm guessing here and hopefully the experts on this site will chime in soon , but it sounds like your torque converter is failing to disengage when the truck is stopped .
I had a 76 Caprice that did this. One winter it sent me through an intersection doing a slow donut when I started to lift off the brake to go ahead.

I'd tell your dealer so they can diagnose this properly.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I am my own dealer, I do all my own work in our farm's shop at home. I'll have to look into the torque converter idea, would there be any other way to tell if it isn't disengaging? It's a 99 4x4 with 180000km

Check to see if your rear brakes are correctly adjusted - some have claimed a problem with the automatic adjuster ( should adjust when you brake in reverse - if you're the kind of driver who just goes from reverse to drive without stopping, that would explain it ).

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

yeah what Kowalski said. check your rear adjustment on your brakes. always go for the more simple fix. it can save you alot of money.

I've adjusted them when I put the new pads and drums on. I try to make a point to slam on the brakes when I am backing up every so often. Just last weekend I adjusted them and bled them and it seemed to help a bit but they still take alot to stop them.
