Turn on and off igntion 3 times without starting the truck, the codes should flash at the odometer.

Isn't that for '00 and up ? I thought some of the older trucks had a different system with flashing lights ?

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

If it is a 97, it will be an OBDII. Take your truck to a local AutoZone or equivalent and have them run a Actron diagnostics. It is free and you will have a code print out supplied with your problems.

Kowalski, you are correct. I forgot that it was on the 00 and up. The 98 Durango doenst have the capability, but on my 91 Dakota I could do the same thing and the check engine light would flash, 3 quick, 1 slow or whatever, then I could go into the Chilton's book and look at the code.

97 was a strange year for the dak. I have been told(Haynes, Chilton, mechanic) that doing the on-off cycle with the ingnition key works, and the check engine light will flash OR the codes will show up on the digital odometer. My check engine light came on, so I checked it this way, it only showed 55 (end of sequence) on the odometer, nothing with the engine light. I had to take it to advance auto, and get the codes pulled that way.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
