Subject: exhaust pipe movement IP: Logged
Message: Hi all,
i've got a loose exhaust fitting that may be the culprit of a noise i've been hearing lately.
where the y-pipe joins the straight-pipe (in front of my single cat).
its loose enough that i can pull them in/out of each other a bit. there is a clamp (?) on that join, and it is bolted or screwed as tight as its gonna get.
can this be fixed by a new clamp-thingy, or is some play in it okay?
Thanks!

should i just crank down on the nuts (ouch!) or get a new one.

Message: What kind of clamp is it? The usual exhaust clamp or a band clamp?

Message: Exhaust clamp. Is it new? If not get a new one(cheap) and crank down on them nuts:) Another option is to weld it.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Tightening them too much causes them to leak and makes it just about impossible to ever get the joint apart again. Your only solution now may be to have it welded.
Try a second clamp, if you have the room.

Message: went to the local muffler shop.
guy there said yup, its loose. should weld it, clamps are no good really.
10 minutes and $40 later i now have a good as new exhaust! yay!
downside: i now have ping as the computer is getting a whole new set of o2 readings i'm sure. but a bit more oomph now, and i know the computer will re-adjust itself.

Message: Well just for an example...my friend took his car in and had an exhaust leak rewelded for free 9and he has no connections at this place). Then when he got his exhaust tips, I believe he had those welded on for $10 (not positive on that one). Welding something that simple takes no more than a few seconds.
I had my Flowmaster put on for $107 (including the muffler)...that involved cutting off my 2 old mufflers and welding in the new Flowmaster, welding the turndown on and welding the pipe to the hangers. I watched him do it...and I swear to you it took no more than probably 5 seconds to weld 2 parts together.

Message: You got to remeber labor cost. The time it took him to put the truck on the lift and the cashier to process the work order probally took at least 30 minutes which would be about 40 dollars. You could have a whole other bunch of stuff weleded on it for a few extra but the prep time takes the longest.

Message: Maybe if they did it with their eyes closed and PUSHED the dak onto the lift and then hand cranked it into the air...I waited for 1-2 hours at the exhaust shop for the guy to do the cars in front of me. Mostly consisting of either putting on new exhaust from the cat back or replacing old rusted out mufflers. Once I got my truck on the lift, I stood and watched him do all the work to it which was basically cut the old exhaust off from the front of the mufflers back, and then weld all the new components in. I was on my way back home within 20 minutes...and that included the time spent where he test-fitted everything by hand before welding to check for any clearance issues.

Message: Sadly, I'm the one who drove it on/off the lift. It only took him a few minutes to do, even with him talking my ear off.
I just had no clue what mig welding should cost and for probably the first time in my life, i didn't call around first for quotes.
doh!
oh well, i figured the other shops in the area would have made me wait, and i needed it done right away so I could go to work.
like i said, live and learn.

Message: lol...just send them a $50 bill for the labor and gas it took to get your truck onto and off of the lift. Make a lil profit with their services. =P
