Subject: Larry and EGR IP: Logged
Message: Larry,
Thanks for all your advice.
I blocked the EGR tube on my 94, and it did wonders.
I guess an EGR can work sometimes, and then not, as I had intermettent problems.

Message: There was an interesting thread with Larry and Bob and others from April 2004.
Larry said if there were problems caused by the EGR, that blocking it would solve the problems, and NOT hurt anything.
There is a 2 bolt connection on the EXHAUST manifold, with a metal tube going to the EGR.
Remove the bolts and loosen the tube mount.
Then insert some gasket material to block the hole.
I got the gasket material at Advance.

Message: Does this cause your engine light to go on? I had egr problems a couple years ago but went for a new valve. I'd rather just cut the whole thing off and use it for a doorstop.

Message: When I needed to replace mine I got trouble codes once in a while. I replaced the egr valve based on an educated guess when looking up the code. Luckilly that was it. Seems to have been fine for years now.

Message: Some of the problems we all have had, and tried to fix by doing and replacing other things.
Bad idle, stumbling, poor performance.
My symptoms were not bad, just annoying.
According to Larry (sorry if I put the wrong words in your mouth, Larry), a properly maintained and tuned truck will pass emmisions testing without the EGR. And the newer Daks do not have an EGR.
But Calif in more stringent, so I don't know.
It just so happens, NC passed a recent law that 1995 and older vehicles will no longer be tested for emmissions. And mine is a 94.
When you block the hole at the manifold, that's all you do. So all the parts are there and connected.
NO check engine light!
And it sure beats $93 plus tax for a piece-of-crap EGR.

So as long as you have your CAT, you can take off your EGR as long as your truck in not under warranty right?

OPERATION
The purpose of the EGR system is accomplished by allowing a specified amount of hot exhaust gas to flow from the exhaust manifold into the intake manifold to mix with the incoming air/fuel mixture. This mixture enters the combustion chamber and lowers the peak flame temperature during combustion. This reduction in combustion temperature reduces the possibility of ignition knock and the level of NOx output.

Message: "According to Larry (sorry if I put the wrong words in your mouth, Larry), a properly maintained and tuned truck will pass emmisions testing without the EGR."
Maybe yes, maybe no. A friend failed without EGR right after a tuneup, passed when a good one was installed. Limit was 3 gpm, he was 4 gpm without one, and 0.5 gpm with a good valve. So it CAN make a big difference.
"And the newer Daks do not have an EGR." None from 1996-2004. They're back for 2005 and newer - couldn't pass without it.
"So as long as you have your CAT, you can take off your EGR as long as your truck in not under warranty right?" You can, but it's still illegal. Federal law forbids removing or disabling any emissions control device. It's a felony. You decide what you are willing to risk. Just remember, it IS unlikely, but convicted felons can never vote or own guns in most states. Tough getting a job, too. Is it worth it?
"So how does HOT gas LOWER the temp?" Because the recirculated exhaust is already cooler than the gases that have just combusted.

Message: Good point about the removing of emission devices bob. Totally spaced that.
I just looked at some prices for EGR valves, 74$+! I checked the image on advance (partsamerica.com) and i think my EGR is missing something. I vagely remember looking at it when i recently replaced the oil pressure sending unit.

Message: The Dakotas didn't have ERGs for 8 years, I wonder why they put them back on?
In the past, auto companies would not install a 99 cent proven safety item because of the cost.
And I'm sure the EGRs are up there $
