Mythbusters had a new show that tested the mpg for a tailgate up vs. tailgate down.
The best mpg was tailgate UP !!

Most newer truck had their bodies designed in a wind tunnel. Older gen1 and 2 daks weren't.

This comes up pretty often. The test has been done by a variety of groups over the years, and the results are invariable the same. Mileage is always better with the tailgate up. It may be out there, but I have yet to see a real test that shows otherwise.

A few years ago, I did the same test so I would know what happens with my truck, with me driving, in my local area. Sure enogh, better mileage with the gate up. Also, even better still with the tannou cover on. But the differance is very small.

DAMN!! I missed that part as soon as
I walked in the door last night. But I did watch them bust the myth of the bottle rocket idea of launching a person in the 100 ft in the air and also the so called conferdate rocket..

IMO dropping the tailgate for fuel mileage isn't worth it, even if it works on a particular pickup. If someone rear-ends you, the tailgate and box will be damaged when they might have just hit the bumper -- or, the extra foot or so might even make the difference between an accident and a close call. And then there's the extra stress on the hinges and support cables.

No tailgate at all seems even worse -- we had some tailgate-less pickups on the family farm on which my Dad had to install gussets in the rear corners after a few years because the box walls were flopping all over. They were Fords, though, which might partly explain it.

genIII's have that little spoiler on the roofline and tailgate to help with aerodynamics some.

From what i've read about the tailgate up or down, it's better up... because with it down, it causes a bad vacuum under it, right next to your drive wheels.

i've also read that a camper top is also worse than a plain tailgate up.

ptschett: I can't defend Fords, and we all know Ford Rangers are nothing but crap (former owner). I just rather have a Isuzi pickup. But the new F-150 and Superdutys are some great trucks. Also I recently been to the GM dealer and looked at the an 06 GM HD with a upgraded Duramax and a new 6 speed Ali (360 HP and 660 ftlbs torque). Now just how long will it take for Dodge to finally have a 5 speed (w O/D) auto and at lest 700 lbs torque out of that Cummins???

Mark: Can you blame the chick? You seen how fast ole Buster launched off the deck with the larger bottle rocket. I bet that was a 3 G pull for just a second or so.

I've heard people blame a missing tailgate for the bed sides spreading before; but if you look at how the gate latches into the sides, there is really nothing to keep them from spreading. Has to do more with how the truck is used - another myth busted...

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Heres a Idea, Remember that who was on Scare Tactics? Lauch her up in the air with a 400 gallon bottle rocket while she's wearing a mini.
