Subject: name of part: where brk caliper bolts to IP: Logged
Message: I was changing the brakes on my 01 Dakota today and I managed to strip out the part where the brake caliper bolts go into, I think that I saw someone call it a shoulder, and someone else called it a steering knuckle. what would I ask for if I went to a salvage yard or maybe the exact dealer name if anyone knows what it is.
Thanks

Message: I used a heli-coil for the same boo-boo. Worked fine (if you can get access to a tap to re-cut the threads)

Message: I once had this same problem and I would heavily advise against using heli-coils on the steering knuckle. I did and it last about 2 weeks, until I had to slam the brakes on hard and the heli-coil pulled out and locked the brake up and nearly caught on fire and had to have it towed. Go to a salvage yard and pick one up for 50-75 bucks. Plan on have a front-end allignment done afterwards as well.

Message: Instead of posting a long old story I will narrow it down, I ended up stripping both of the holes on my steering knuckle with the help of both a self tapping oversized bolt and my tap and die set. Anyways now both holes have helicoils on them and I am extremely worried about it failing on me. I know that the oversized self-tapping bolt states that you can only use one of those per side (the other bolt has to be an oem bolt). I could not find any specific info on the helicoils that says that it would be dangerous to use two of them on the same side.
Thanks for all of your info guys.
Has anyone else had a helicoil bust??

Message: If you have evr installed heli-coil, them you know that it is a band-aid at best. They only recommend heli-coil for NON-stressed parts/bolts. (i.e. somewhere like the mounting brackets on your headlight assembly) I work in an area that refurbishes electric motors, and some @ss wipe mechanic installed helicoil on a stressed area(on a 3600RPM, 400HP motor). Upon start up, the torque generated, ripped the heli-coil bolts out, and spun the damn thing around like a possessed tasmanian devil, and almost killed the tech performing the test...
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Yea good point! As a matter of fact , the first heli coil did screw up and last about two weeks! I just got the second put on from a shop so If it fails I will sue the pants off them for practicing unsafe procedures(section 236)

Message: Heli-Coils in the area described (brake caliper slide pins) are perfectly safe and are recognized repair procedure. The one in my truck has been there for 2 years. If you are having problems with Heli-coils coming out it's because the people doing it are clueless. The goes for 99% of the shade tree types that watch 2 Guys Garage and think they know it all.

Message: (Whatever/pacman)How hard could it be? The instructions are fairly straightforward and easy.
Todd- are you saying that a shop applied a helicoil to the same place? "On the steering knuckle".
If so, and a reputable shop actually installs helicoils then it must be safe right? If it weren’t safe then they would not be allowed to install them right?
What really worries me is that both of the holes on my steering knuckle now have helicoils on them, most people only install one, so if it fails at least you still have some support from the other good bolt. I am just not willing to put my family in a truck that is unsafe, especially for a 50-100 dollar part!

Message: Like I said above, helicoil is for NON-stressed areas. Also, applying it to 1 of the bolts if fine, and like whatever said are a recognized repair procedure, but not to both of them. But to pacman, whatever, and anyone I missed, the ONLY way to f-up hcoil installation is to pick the wrong size/length...they make it so a monkey could do it, but I have seen it fail under sress even when it was installed by a professional that had been doing it for 39 years.
Angel B - It is up to you. I have seen hcoil last as long as the equipment was in service, but I have also seen it fail. Personally, I try to be on the side of caution, even if I have to bite the bullet on a $100 piece of forged steel.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

You can say whatever you like, it doesn't mean you have a clue what you're talking about.
Heli Coil repairs are perfectly safe for stripped slider pins, as long as the repair is done correctly.
And you are wrong about the ways to fcuk up heli coil repair or anything for that fact. Give some people the simplest job on the planet and some mouth breather will invent new ways to fcuk it up.
Darwins Laws apply to everything from hair spray to heli coils.

Message: Yep pacman, I take the safety of my family very seriously.
I agree with you 'whatever' about people f'ing up the simplest job, and yes, I don't know everything, but what would be the fun in that:), but I DO know something about helicoil. It was probably one of the best inventions for stripped bolts, and it will hold up for a LONG time, and if I had never seen the stuff fail, I would probably say sure, go ahead and use it, but I have, and I won't...simple as that. AND you already summed it up for me without even saying it: "MURPHY's" law applies to everything from hairspray to helicoil:)
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
