 Subject: oil pressure

I started my '00 dakota for the first time in 6 months yesterday and it ran ok for 5 minutes. Then the oil pressure guage dropped to no pressure. Could this be my oil pump and if so how difficult is it to change?

Could be the sending unit or guage as well.
I think it's rather difficult to change the oil pump. As I recall reading about it on my 95 you have to losen a moter mount to get the pump out.
Maybe someone with a later model can chime in.

I noticed the opposite with my '96 Dakota that I had. The oil pressure always ran high, but never crossed over the mark.

Could also be a clogged filter? Maybe you have sludge in your engine.

Have you change the oil yet?
Several ways to clean the engine if you have sludge.
have a shop do an engine flush (pepboys here in GA does it using a billstein machine). like $80 with pro-line (pepboys brand) oil change. Cost more for namebrand/synthetic. This is the safest. Call some shops and ask if they have an "engine flush service".
Run Marvel Mystery oil or transmission fluid in your oil. Change oil, put in 1 qt transmission or MM oil and rest oil. Run 500 miles (or until pressure starts fluctuating). Change with all oil. Run 500 miles to "flush" it. Change oil, go back to regular oil changes. You may want to try switching to synthetic oil. The transmission fluid is abrasive, I think one person said they used to run transmission fluid instead of oil to accelerate wear. Not sure about MM oil, several people here have recommended/used it. Use a good high quality filter (20 micros vs 25 micros, etc).
After you clean it, you may want to consider using seafoam at every oil change. seafoamsales.com
