Subject: Fuel filter needing to be replaced? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with 68,000 miles.
I've had the fuel sending unit replaced last year at 62,000 miles for 900 dollars and the problem seem to have worsen since then. I've had to make a long trip back to the dealer that replaced my fuel sending unit (I moved 200 miles away) and they didn't to fix anything.
Lately, I couldn't start my truck after 2 or 3 tries and shifting P,N,R,D gears. On some occassions after a succesful ignition, the truck dies down after going 5 mph. On top of that, I'm suffering gas mileage (19 mpg @ 70 mph and I usually get 26 mpg at the same speed) and lost some acceleration. The gas pedal feels very tense and I hesitate to top more than 70 mph.
I wonder if all these problems are related to the fuel sending unit or the entire system, since my engine light shows a P0442, which is a fuel leak in the system.
Could it be the fuel filter being clogged up? If so, how much would the part and labor cost to have it done at a local dealer where I live now? Or should I go back to the same dealer that replaced my fuel sending unit?
Thanks in advance.

Message: MPG doesn't suffer just because of a dirty fuel filter. Sounds like a clogged cat.

Message: ScojoDak,
Thanks for your reply. Would the clogged cat be under the Federal or California Emission Warranty?

Message: Yes, the cat is covered under the fed warranty. Take it to any muffler shop, they will test for free.

Message: clogged cat
that's right around when the catalytic converter goes bad.
the truck will continue to get worse and will eventual be disable.
away to find if it is the cat, make one cut through the exhaust piping right before the cat and move the back part of the piping down below the exhaust before the cat. the truck will be loud for it wont be running through the muffler. "the point is to STOP the EXHAUST from RUNNING through the CAT"
if the truck runs like it use to then you found the problem. "good luck" do tell when you find and fixes the problem.

Message: Toolfan,
Thanks. I heard about this method, but I don't think I'll attempt cutting it myself, since I'm not really experienced. I'll be checking out the local dealer to see if they can find the problem. With the engline light code P 0442, it does sound like it fits with the CAT.
I'll keep you posted.

Message: Sucks about the prob but I have just one question....How do you manage to get 26 mpg? I can understand going from 19 to like 15 or lower but 26? Wow I'd be extatic...actually I'd be happy to average 19 in the first place.

Message: Mr. Spenser,
Yes, that is just about what I got when I did an online database search. I noticed some leak coming out of the muffler pipe, as well as dried stained liquid on the bottom of the CAT.

Message: Adam,
I'm really not sure actually. I suppose I live in the valley where everything is flat.
I make sure the air pressure in my tires are at least 35 and I don't carry any heavy items in my truck. I also set my truck on cruise control on highways and try to maximize every gas pedal acceleration (I rarely use the brakes to slow down on highways and let my truck slow down to near crawl until full stop). BTW, I have not modded my truck at all.
I hope that answers your question.

Message: Update
I got call from the dealer after dropping my truck off. He said it was suprise!, a loose gas cap that had to be tightened.
I don't see how this could explain the loss of gas mileage and ignition problems? I am thinking it has something to do with the fuel sending unit that's been replaced last year. Since then, the replacement hasn't improved my truck.
I'll see what more info I can get from the dealer when I pick my truck up today.
