Message: Super Bee hit one point right. The other point is that most politicians are in bed with the oil companies and own stock in them; why would they want an alternate source of fuel? It would hurt their pocket books. You can't just point the finger at Bush even if his family was/is in big oil. Oil companies support both political parties. Name me a politician (not a Ralph Nader type) who has gone with vehemence towards the automakers to produce alternative fuel vehicles? We buy what they throw at us. Honda and Toyota are leading the pack with Hybrids because the media has jumped on their bandwagon (this is not a bad thing) and look at how long you have to wait to purchase a hybrid?
And yes, the government has come up with MPG standards that all automakers are supposed to comply with, but that is just PC talk. They do this to appease the environmentalists. If it was something they were adamant about, they would have told the various automakers to get rid of the Hummer, Expedition, and every vehicle that gets less than 20mpg.

Message: Back on the Hydrogen fuel thing. Electrolysis conversion doesn't require burning fuel. A dedicated hyroelectric plant by river or wave or solar or wind. There are lots of "free" sources of energy after the initial investment in made. You've got to break the oil addiction. Every physic lab in the world can demo electrolsis. It ain't rocket sceince. It won't happen over night, but you have get started now. Alibi's and excusses won't get it done. The oil company's will always have an barrier to them loosing money. Cars replaced horses, fuels have to change too. Lead or get out of the way.

Message: It's sad that our society doesn't implement change until it's compelled to. A lot of smart people have said that the best thing that could happen is for oil and gas prices to go outrageously high and stay that way - only then will government and industry get serious about renewable energy.
Consumers definately share some responsibility for the auto makers' foot-dragging. While it's true that utilitarian truck buyers must take what's offered, millions of people have been buying a 15mpg truck/SUV where a 30mpg sedan would suit their needs just as well.

Message: Combustion of hydrogen produces NOx, same as gasoline combustion. Also you still have the same problem of producing hydrogen in sufficient quantities, and the predominant method now is reformation of natural gas, which produces CO as a byproduct. So you might as well just burn natural gas directly.
Hydrogen currently holds the most promise for motor vehicles, but the long term key to making it practical goes back to how we generate electricity for everything, and we need to deal with that before we can produce hydrogen cheaply and in large quantities without resorting to fossil fuels.

Message: This is one instance, like space exploration, that goverment needs to be involved for the R&D and incentives. Business is so gunshy after being screwed so many times that won't gamble on it alone. Put a goverment R&D contract out there for Hydogen Hummers for the whole Army and it will happen. Profit drives inovation not curiousity. (my spelling sucks)
