My 2000 5-speed has over 100k. I've never serviced the tranny. The owner's manual says it shouldn't need maintenance, and as far as I can tell not so much as even a check of the fluid level is part of the maintenance schedule. However, my Hayne's manual says to change the manual tranny fluid every 60k. (yes, the MANUAL tranny fluid. i am not an idiot).
Your thoughts?

Wow...I change mine every 25-30K. Go royal purple or amsoil synthetic, you will notice alot smoother shifting/etc. 75W90. Oh...change it, your tranny will love you:)
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

I also change mine every 35,000-50,000. I used the Amsoil 10w-30 oil the first time. For the second I got the Pennzoil syncromesh from Autozone(it was a little cheaper). Both worked just fine. You need two quarts.
BTW mines a NV-3500 HD.

ok ... so how easy is it to fill? i'm pretty confident i can drain the fluid out, but what's the best way to go about putting it back?

The auto parts store should sell little pumps that screw onto the top of the quart size bottles of oil. This works perfectly to fill the transmission and the rear differential with out any mess or any creative funnel placement.
You could also pull the shifter off and fill it from the inside of the cab, but make sure to keep the fill plug on the side open so you don't overfill it.
