Subject: high-mileage oil? IP: Logged
Message: So my 2000 4.7 just turned over 100,000 miles so this last time around I decided to use Castrol's High-Mileage oil. I feel like a tool now because I didn't do any research first. For the life of this truck I have just used regular 5-30 but today I have been doing some reading and I read that the conditioners in the high-mileage oils can swell the seals such that if you ever go back to a regular oil or even a synthetic the engine may actually start consuming oil because the seals will be damaged w/o the high-mileage conditioners to help.
I don't know what I was thinking--the truck has never consumed oil so I am assuming that despite the high miles everything is great in there.
So what's the deal? I am wanting to go out and do another change right now to get the Castrol out of there. I am thinking of only using synthetics from here on out (Mobil 1?).
Your thoughts please.

Message: i would say that is a good idea.
i have been thinking of switching over to per-synthetics but have heard that the seals will sometimes leak on the 318s
i use 10w-30 castrol-synthetic blend.
i change my oil every 2500miles and burn a 1/2qt in between oil changes.
152000miles and still smokes the tires with eases

It appears that many owners are going to "high mileage" oils for no reason other then they have a high mileage engine ... whether or not their engines are demonstrating problems.
Most "high mileage" oils are just basic conventional oils that are formulated a bit on the thicker side of their respective viscosities, plus they add about 10% esters in the base oil for their slight seal swelling effect (which is very very minor I must add).
Some people are switching if their vehicles are consuming oil. The main reason people see reduced oil consumption (using high mileage oil) is due to their thicker viscosity.
Most of these oils appear to be marketing gimmicks. I am not saying they are "bad" oils ... just gimmicks.

Message: Have to agree with the Amsoil guy. The only differance I have been able to tell with the high mileage oils, is the seal swelling.
It can be useful for a car that isn't worth the repair bill to control some minor leakage.

Message: Hey Steven good to see your still around.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides with the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon those with great vengeance and with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know that my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee
