Subject: seized 3.21 diff. IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone. My 98 dakota has 180K and this is my first major mechanical!
I wanted to see if I could get some advice. My pinion gear snapped when it seized and I am looking to swap out my 3.21 for a 3.55 gear ratio. (The 3.55 seems to be much more available.) I know I will have a speedometer issue and wanted to see if anyone has made these adjustments. THANKS!!!

Message: The speedometer will be innacurate after a gear change like that. Not a problem, though. Just go down to the dealership and get a new driven gear to match the new diff gear.
As for the ration, I wopuld reconsider your choice. I swapped from a 3.21 to a 3.55. Very little differance. I could feel it, but it wasn't much. You really should consider a 3.92. Especially if most of your driving is less than 80 mph, or you tow a fair amount.

Message: Intense is correct - you should not have a speedometer issue as it is driven by the tone ring in the rear.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: They changed the dakota's in '98. I have an '97 and even though it has the new body style, the spedo was still driven from the tailshaft. In general, the '97 had cosmetic changes and the '98 got mechanical changes

Message: .boB,
looks like we're back on schedule.. haha!!
1998 and newer dakotas and rams use a tone ring that is mounted on the carrier, underneath the ring gear. The speedometer/abs sensor is located on the top of the differential and uses that "tone ring". Since it's on the carrier, the ring gear ratio is left out of the equation. Only way to change the speedometer on a 98+ is by changing tire size.
there is no gear to change for the speedo if you do change tire size. You'll need some sort of calibration unit or have your dealer reset your PCM for the tire size.
