Subject: Differential Size IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. I'm planning on swapping my rear end gears from 3:55 to 4:10 but I need to know what size rear differential I have. I counted 10 bolts on the differential cover. Anybody know what size this is?

Message: The option sticker on the glovebox lid should tell you the rear axle size. Anyway, 10 cover bolts is an 8-1/4, while the 12 bolt cover is on the 9-1/4 axles.

Message: Details are helpful when asking questions online.
What year is your truck? What engine? 2wd or 4x4?
Dodge used 3 different rear differentials in the Dakota over the years, two of which have 10 bolts.
Besides the 8 1/4" mentioned above, some of the "N" body Dakotas (87-96) were available with a 7 1/4" rear diff which is also a 10 bolt cover.

Message: That's right. If it's 2wd then rear is either 7.25 or 8.25 (optional). If it's 4wd then front is 7.25 and rear is 8.25. All w/ 10 cover bolts.

Message: since it's newer truck then 7.25 is pretty much out of question. It must be 8.25/10 holes, oval shape.

Message: it is not the 9.25. as he stated, it's a 10 bolt... 8.25
if you have a 9.25, you should have an octogon cover with 12 bolts.

Message: if you want a DIY kind of thing, the best would be to get a Powertrax unit. They are pretty easy to do and dont require you to "setup" any gears.
