Subject: Lug Bolts (studs) IP: Logged
Message: Rotated my tires last weekend, had my son help and he accidently stripped one of the lug bolts on my passenger-side rear wheel. Bought the lug stud to replace it, and looks like it should be simple, but was wondering if there was any tips I needed to know going in.
Thanks.

Message: The lugs are pressed in to the axle flange. I've tried replacing them before, always with poor luck. Others have done it in the driveway with apparently good results, but I never have.
My suggestion is to take the axle out of the truck, to the machine shop, and have the old one pressed out and a new one pressed in.

Message: you should be able to get the old one out with a good punch and 2 or 3 lb hammer(may need to heat the flange a little). to install the new one, put the stud through the hole, put a boxed end wrench over the stud and start a lug on it. then use an impact wrench to tighten the lug. this will draw the stud into the axle flange. loosen lug and remove wrench.

Your best bet is to buy two and some washers that will fit over the studs. Use one of the new studs to beat out the bad one. Then stick the good stud in and put the washer on and then the lug nut. Crank that baby on until it looks like all the others and you should be good to go.

Message: daddio's method will work if your wheel nuts are not bevelled where they contact the wheel.
Ask me how I know.
It'll take more than 100ft/lbs to seat that lug.

Message: Thanks for the help. It wasn't too bad - old stud came out relatively easy with balpeen hammer, and new one went in by using a couple of closed end wrenches for spacers, impact gun and finally a torque wrench (set at 135 ft/pds).
