Saturday, October 22nd, 2005. I was bored. So...
California Interstate 5, north of Sacramento, where it's fairly flat.
Altitude less than 200 ft.
5-10kt headwind.
Tailgate down.
Overdrive on.
Temp 75*F.
Set cruise control for the speed, recorded engine rpm, reset the overhead trip computer, held each speed for 20 miles, then recorded avg mpg indicated on overhead trip computer.
55mph, engine at 1500rpm, 23.8 mpg
60mph, engine at 1600rpm, 22.5 mpg
65mph, engine at 1700rpm, 21.7 mpg
70mph, engine at 1800rpm, 20.1 mpg
How's that?

Message: you cant get an accurate reading off that trip computer. I get from 16 to 20 in mix driving. and about average from what I seen others post with the 4.7s. thats from fill up and dividing the miles from the GAL. my mileage would be higher but I live in the moutains and we all know how it sucks gas. so I wouldthink that it wouldnt be too musch different from your V-6. my truck is a 03 QC 4.7 4x4 5 speed auto 3.55 gears.

Message: Jecht.
I was returning home to Seattle from a short visit with relatives in San Jose.
These were constant-speed hiway miles on a level road in fair weather, and the trip computer was as accurate as I was gonna get under the circumstances.
I also wanted to experiment with tailgate up and with OD off, but I started getting into the mountains.
Also, once I got into Oregon, I had no control over the amount of gas I got from the pumps. By Oregon state law, only gas station employees can insert the nozzle and squeeze the handle. Oregon does not allow you to gas up your own vehicle.
Normal weekday around town/commute-to-work/run errands/etc I consistently score 14 to 17 mpg, depending on how heavy my foot is.
And why do you think I can't get an accurate reading off the trip computer? I'm sure there's a margin of error, but I doubt it's more than a percent point or two in the conditions of my previous post.
Not long ago, just after I got the truck, I made a 6000-mile trip around the country, keeping track of fuel used and miles traveled. At the end of the journey, the trip computer and my calculator disagreed by 0.1 mpg. Pretty darn close.

Yeah I lead foot it once a day plus I use 4x4 once or twice a week.

Message: Hrmmm my 2000 CC 4x4 seems to get around 14-15 no matter what driving condition I have. I leadfoot it i get around 14.2 I baby the thing like no other I get around 14.9 About 99% of my driving is city though. When I do drive on the highway my milage bumps up to around 16-18. In the winter when the gas stations put the nasty additives in my milage goes down to about 12-13.

Message: I have an '01 QC 4x4 with the 4.7L and a manual trans. I average 16 MPG. I have gotten as high as 19 MPG on long trips (freeway miles) with the A/C on, and as low as 14 MPG driving around town or towing. I admit I do drive with a lead foot!
I knew when I bought this truck that the mileage wouldn't be that great, but I didn't buy it for gas mileage! I bought it for power and torque. Before the Dakota I had a Toyota 4x4 with the 3.0 V6 (dependable yet unimpressive motor) and was only averaging about 17 MPG in it, so I'm not dissapointed with my Dakota's fuel economy. It was about what I expected it to be, and I saw the fuel economy on the factory sticker before I bought it, so knew what I was getting into. If you buy the truck, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed my Dakota!

Message: I own a 2002 QC 4x4 4.7l auto with 3.55 gears and 265/70r16 tires. Mine gets 13 in town pretty mush regardless of how i drive it or wether or not the ac is on. On the freeway i get 18.5 pretty much all time time, i live in the northeast where we have lots of hills too. On the freeway I have about a 400 mile range before the low fuel light pops. When i drive from Mass to West Virginia to see a friend i only have to stop once. Im pretty happy with my Dak's milage on the freeway.
Towing is a whole different thing. I tow a 19' bassboat and i get 13-14 freeway depending on wether the ac is on or not. Ive never really checked it towing in town because everywhere i fish pretty much requires a freeway ride.

Message: BTW Stevej i agree with Jecht. The overhead trip computer really cant be trusted at least mine cant. Mine claims at 70 on the freeway that im geting 21.5 every time. But like i said in my about post real world i get 18.5 freeway.
You and i have the same basic truck and those mumbers you are gettgin are incredible for a 4wd dakota if you are really getting it. I seem to get about average milage compared to what everybody else i know with a 4.7l dakota geta and actually a little better then the epa sticker claims on the freeway.

Message: 04 Quad CAb 4.7/auto, 4x4, 3.55, 245/70/16. In the warmer months I get high 14s, maybe 15 if I drive real gentle. Once it gets cold it's low 13s if Im heavy on the gas and high 13s or low 14s if I'm gentle. During work week, my work commute is 5 minutes of city and 2-3 minutes of highway each way. On the weekends I do my highway driving, trips of 25-30 minutes or more usually. All-time best was 18.9 mpg on a road trip with the cruise set at about 65. By the way I do the math by hand, no trip computer involved.
I agree, trip computers don't always provide the best numbers.

Message: steve J dont you think they would set the trip computer to read higher than what the vehicle is accually getting in gas mileage. after all if you have that trip computer. yo u wont bother with figuring out your mileage. sorrry but would never trust them trip computers. just like I dont trust the gas guage. I know the best I ever did was almost 22 MPG but that was just after changing the plugs and oil. after that I get 18 to 20 MPG. I would guess my city MPG would go up. if I let the truck warm up. as our trucks run rich when they are cold.
but if you trust the trip computer as the gospel. then more power to you. you are the first I have ever heard say that its accurate. everyone else said they was way off. makes me think you dont bother figuring it out the old way. I will have to get me one of these overhead consoles so I can see how off they are.

Message: Dammit!
Jecht, You're on to something there. The cynical bastard in me should have guessed that Dodge would do something like this.
Your previous comments got me wonderin' so I decided to try something I hadn't done before (and didn't think was necessary).
I reset the trip meter on the dash and the one on the overhead computer, and watched them both count the miles for a couple days.
The overhead trip meter counts faster than the dash trip meter. Not so much that it got my attention earlier, but enough to make my mileage figures read higher than actual. In about 30 miles, the overhead trip counter was winning the race to the tune of 7/10 of a mile. That's comes to a whopping 140 mile error over that 6000 mile trip I took earlier in the year. Must have reset the overhead trip meter by accident about that far into the trip.
So it seems there's quite a bit o'truth to what you said about not trusting the overhead computer.
The trip meter on the dash spontaneously resets itself for some unknown reason, so I never really pay it much attention. I wish the odometer would do that just once!
OK everybody - forget what I said earlier. I was wrong, I just didn't know it. And those mileage figures I posted earlier are wrong, too.
My eyes have been opened.
Dammit.

Message: I agree with the Droid. My 01 gets 17 if I feather the gas and drive like a granny going to church. It's more like 12-15 in city driving. When I tow my boat it's down around 10MPG.
Don't go by the EPA numbers, like most numbers the government comes up with, they are meaningless and very inaccurate.

Message: Steve J I never knew they was that far off. thanks for doing a test on this to show how far off they was. I dont have one but just went with what others said. you would think beings both displays are digital. they could just wire it to the odometer trip counter and get an accurate reading.

Message: Yeah, but the signals to the overhead console are not input pulses from drive sensors, they're imbedded in digital data words from either the PCU or CTM.
I asked Dodge and Jeep service guys if the overhead computer needed programming, or if it was a simple replacement job if one went bad. They said programming to a vehicle, as in inputting the VIN, wasn't necessary. "If it's the right part number, you just plug it in and it works," they said.
So I'm reading up on it in the FSM and looking at the wiring diagrams to see what more I can learn about it.
