Subject: Brake Shims? IP: Logged
Message: I have been having nothing but problems with my front brakes on my 99 5.2. I have finally figured out the warping issue on the rotors (bought heavier rotors than the el-cheapo ones) but I am still having problems with the brake pads.
On my last change (about 3K ago) I replaced my normal pads with ceramic pads. At first everything was ok, but later on down the road i am getting nothing but squeaking (VERY loud), grinding (on occasion), and rotors that look like someone has been hitting them with a blow torch.
I plan on changing them yet again soon with some softer pads (no more ceramic for me!) but one question comes to mind...are the brakes on my Dakota supposed to have shims?
Any help would be appreciated.

Message: If they look burnt, then they are probably dragging. This time, replace the calipers and hoses.

Message: I had the same problem. I solved by using power slot cryo (cryogenically treated) rotors and Hawk pads from Tire Rack. Follow the instructions for break-in and you should have the warping problem fixed.

Message: Shims? Where?
If they're clipped to the back side of the disk brake pads, they perform an anti-rattle/anti-squeal function, and there should be only one on each pad.

Message: check the slide area on the spindle, the pads wear an indentation on the sliding surface and settle in there preventing them from releasing properly. Had the same problem on my 00 4.7 2WD. Had to repair the slide surface with jb weld and sand it down smooth again so the pads will travel properly (or you can replace the spindles)
