Subject: Pep Boys tire repair rule???? IP: Logged
Message: I have tires from Pep Boys. Had a screw in it for the past few weeks and finally got in yesterday.
Well. They came to me and said their RULE is they can NOT repair a tire that has the screw within one inch of the side wall. I mean. This screw looks to be about exactly one inch from the sidewall and in the tread. And NOT a big srew. Like a #8
So with full road hazard, and like 80% tread left, I had to pay $42 for a NEW tire.
I bet they PATCHED my old tire after I left and have it on the USED rack...
I know I could have got Discount to do a repair (for a small fee) but was too busy to bother.
Damn. I was a tire monkey like 10 yrs ago. We could do a tire repair as long as it was NOT IN the side wall. Even if it was close to the edge, but in the tread, we'd fix it.
WTF?
Anyone else have similar thing happen?

Message: I have never had good luck with pep boys price or service, for my money I would rather pay a little more and go to a locally owned tire shop.

Message: ya pep boys suck will never buy there again. when i had a nail like an inch and a half away from the sidewall and went to discount tire(because pep boys sucks) and they said the same thing it was to close to the sidewall to patch. they said the nail was in a flex point in the tire and if i ever drive up on a curbe or over something at a weard angle the patch would pop off.

Message: Sounds like they're hosing you guys to make more money. Worked at a garage for a while about 20 years ago; the patch salesman came in with a van with the front sidewall quilled like a porcupine with hundreds of plugs - great sales technique. I used one on the front tire of my motorcycle with no problems. You can easily fix stuff like this yourself with the cheap (like $5) plug kit from Walmart, I carry one in my glovebox.

Message: That's not just a pepboys rule, that's a rule alot of tire shops have. They won't accept the risk for patching a tire too close to the sidewall.
I had that happen on my old ranger and the independent shop told me the same. I know he was not out for money, he replaced a vlave stem for me for free a short time before. And I didn't buy the tires from him.

Message: I worked for Oregon Tire years ago, and we would patch or plug the tire as long as it was not on the sidewall or sidewall edge. As long as it was in the tread we would fix it, and never had any problems. I know a lot of tire places are just really cautious as they don't want to risk being liable in case of an accident caused by thier repair.

Message: I figured it was just to make more $$$
Because at Big O they used to patch them as long as it wasn't IN the side wall.
Anyway. Glad to hear it is not just ONE shop that told me that B.S.

Message: Pep boys tried to screw me over once.. they said the tire was beyond repair... yet i knew they would try to re sell the tire first chance they got, so when the guy asked me what i wanted to do... i pulled out my switch blade and stabbed it through the side wall so they couldnt re use it and said "its junk now".. and got a new one under the warranty since according to them it was already beyond repair... it had a roofing nail 1.5 inches from the sidewall

Message: I Drive a DAk, QC,
We also have a Mazda protege, 5spd, sompletely stock.
We bought tires with the full warranty and whatever at Wal Mart.
ONe day, I notice a near flat at my house on the car. I mentioned it to my wife, (who does have a clue byu the say) and said she didn't notice while driving. (short trips, still had some air.)
I changed it out, drove to Wal mart and went shopping.
I picked it up, the receipt said that the customer drove on a flat, and they replaced the tire.
Free, and that was it.
Try Wal mart next time.
For my Dak, It's Discont Tire.

Message: I won't go to Pep Boys anymore. First, parts seem to be more expensive than many other places. As far tires go, I bought a set there (decent tires, decent price). Well, turns out instead of torquing the lugs to specs, then just take the old impact wrench and ended damaging something. Which I found out when I had the tires rotated (somewhere else).

Message: my parents had some work done at pep boys on our old dodge minivan may years ago. i think that they replaced the half-shafts. well anyway, when they put reattached the tie rod end to the knuckle, they didnt put the cotter pin back in the crown nut. about a week later, we made a trip to south georgia and on the way home, we heard something hit the bottom of the van. we just assumed it was a rock. about two hours later and a lot of highspeed highway miles(thanks to my dads heavy left foot) the damn tie rod end and knuckle seperated at a red light. we fixed it on the side of the road and took it back to pepboys. they said that they werent responsible and gave us the runaround. needless to say, i will never even go in a pepboys again.
