Message: I just bought a 2000 Dakota with a 3.9 4wd I have a couple concerns i get a real bad rattle im thinking its the timing chain, it only does it under a load. Also does my newer dodge come with a tensioner and if so do i have to pull the cover to tighten it.

Message: Are you sure the "rattle" isn't detonation (spark knock / pinging)? If it is the chain you have to replace it, the tensioner isn't adjustable.

Message: Well i thought it was pinging or spark knock what would cause it, i thought wrong timing would cause it i changed the plugs but they all looked good (choclate brown) where do i start?

Message: Try a tankful of higher octane gas - if it stops then it's detonation. Let us know and we'll go from there.

Message: What kind of plugs are in it now? You could try one heat range colder plugs - also changing to a 180 degree thermostat might help.
