Hey all!! Just recently, i've gone back to 87 octane after running 89 all summer, and with the radio OFF and me listening closely, I think i'm hearing a bit of detonation. My truck's a '99 3.9 2wd auto. VERY good shape w/ only 40,000kms. Now my Q is, if it is indeed detonation, would it be heard even through the radio on low volume or only with my radio off and usually when shifting into 3rd gear????

Try going back to a tankful of 89 and if it stops then you have your answer. You could try going to one range colder spark plugs, that might allow you to use 87. If you see any broken insulators on plugs that's a sure sign also.

If you deside it is detonation and your already running a colderr plug I would open the plug gap 10,000 wider then stock > This also can help depending on how bad it is > You can go another number colder but that's about the limit if your running a stock engine or it will start to not run so smooth > At more then 2 numbers colder your plugs will start to carbon with in town driving

I just pulled my 3923's and they were wet looking - not tan and dry. Why would mine be wet?

Well, you could have incomplete combustion(injectors leaking by) or you are getting oil in the chamber. Just a couple of suggestions. Is this after running the engine, or after it has been sitting?

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
