Subject: surging and low and hi speeds

Been having this issue and a few others for a few weeks.

My truck will surge at both highway speed and slow speeds. On the highway, it's a rough sudden stop then go. In the city, sometimes it's so bad it feels like I can't drive a manual and I bark the tires. Other times it's not as bad and i dont bark the tires, but you can definately feel the shifting issues. Last night on the highway, it happened twice back-to-back, both times the check engine light flashed on and off quickly. It happened more than twice, but the other times it was not more than once at a time and the check engine light did not come on.

I also have on occasion a very rough idle while in park or stopped. So rough, it almost dies sometimes. This maybe an issue with the EGR, but not 100% sure.

I just replaced the TPS. I resoldered the #115 splice. No codes are ever stored. I also replaced the transmission fluid and filter a few weeks back.

Truck is 3.9 4x4 auto with 163k+ miles.

It seems to me, this may be a problem with the torque converter. I think it's the torque converter because of the behavior. It's hard to explain that part. It's like I go to 1st then 2nd and into 3rd then when i slow down, the speed drops back to 2nd but the truck is still in 3rd. It will shift roughly (thump) back to 2nd or if i accelerated into 3rd again and then slow down, it'll downshift properly.

this transmission problem occured before changing the fluid and filter. I thought adjusting the bands would resolve the issue, but it has not. Could it still be the bands are not adjusted properly?

Anything else i should look at before rulling it a problem with the transmission/torque converter?
