Message: Changed the pads and rotors on my front brakes. F'ed up one of the mounting pins on the driver's side. Result was a strong vibration during driving; the vibration would cease whenever I braked. Yesterday I took it apart, and put in a helicoil and a new pin.
The vibration is still there, though. What else could be causing it? Or did I completely screw up the knuckle with the initial infraction? Is it possible to drill out and reinstall a helicoil? Or maybe I should get one of those self-tapping oversized pins? Help is appreciated!

Message: Well I took the wheel off, reinstalled that one helicoil and put another helicoils in the second pin position. I also put in new brake fluid and bled the brakes while I was at it. The vibration is less, but it's still there! Any suggestions?

Message: For posterity, in case anyone searches these forums with a question relating to a similar brake problem -
My problem was the driver's side caliper. I replaced both calipers, and I made sure to clean off the surface where the pins mount and the hub face with a wire brush. There was a LOT of rust down there. There are other posts on this board talking about specific problems with the pistons in the calipers. I bought semi-loaded calipers instead of rebuilding the pistons myself, so unfortunately I can't add to those discussions except to say that my piston was also the culprit.

Message: Thanks for the note. I feel compelled to complete the tale in the hopes it will help some future me. After changing the calipers, the truck ran fine for about two days. Then the vibration came back but was so slight that I lived with it for a week or so. Then it started to get bad again, and it appeared on the passenger side, too. Mostly when turning, but not always.
Long story short, when I started the original brake job, I didn't know there were two kinds of anti-squeal disc brake compound. The guys at a certain auto parts store sold me the orange stuff which gels and basically glues the pads to the caliper. The Hayne's manual said to use some anti-squeal grease on the caliper pins, so I dutifully put the orange stuff on the pins. As a result the calipers weren't free to move easily on the pins. Today I put Sil-Glyde on the pins, and now the truck runs fine. It's a good thing I used the Heli-coils the first time instead of using an oversized self-tapping pin.

Message: Yep 1 Same thing with me 1 I had a heli coil put in the shoulder and still having vibration1 Just took the wheel off and found that the bottom caliper bolt is out of the rubber boot a little and can not tighten it so I figure it the god damb SHoulder spot that rusted out! If anyone nows what I can do about it besides buying a new or used shoulder please let me now.
I had it with this shoulder and caliper.
My heli coil must have baked right off the shoulder. Top one is holding it tight so Ill just drive it like that till I can get this thing figured out !
