Message: To put it as kindly as I think I can.... GACK!
I hope that it doesn't happen. I was looking forward to a tastefully updated version of a great body-style. That thing makes me think of the hideous abomination that is the Pontiac Aztek (shudder).
Should the next Dakota look even remotely like that example, I hope that Ford comes to their senses and offers the Ranger with the 4.6 HO, and makes the cab a little bigger, so I'll have something to buy when my 2001 Dakota starts to squeak and moan.

Message: UGH. I'll stay with my Classic 2000, and buy used ones after that if they put that thing out. The intial draw to my truck was the looks. I wanted something that looked like a truck, not something that might be driven on another planet.
I was told by a dealer that the Gen3 front end design was based on an old Freightliner truck. (1940's, I think he said) Anyone else heard that, or was he blowing smoke? Whatever the inspiration, it was a great decision.

Message: Your points are so well taken. I heard a Mercedes salesman explain to me why the Mercedes body design has changed so little over all the years. He said that rich peoople do not want a car that looks like it goes out of style just because the car company decided to change it, so that anyone with an older model now looked out of date. He pointed to a Mercedes sitting outside and asked me what year it was. I know NOTHING about Ms, but I guessed 1990. He said it is a 1971. So that owner does not have to worry about his car looking like it was 30 years old. Now, look at a 30 year old American car...his point was made with me. Just something to think about. I like the classic looks of our Daks, but change is inevitable.

Message: Sounds like Jeep. The CJ series went so long without a large amount of changes that most people don't notice. It wasn't until the YJ that people noticed (square headlights).
GM was reluctant to change the suburban after as long it had been going because truck owners typically don't like change. It's really only recently that truck style has started the 4 year cycle that cars undergo.
But can someone do me a favor and bring back the GM designers that did the Grand Prix and fire the current crop? (I think Ford fired them a couple years ago)

Message: I think they used to change the bodystyles more often in the past then they do now. This was not true with Trucks but think about cars form the 60's and 70's. It is awesome to be able to look at a Plymouth Cuda from about any angle and be able to exactly know what year it is. Some designs are hits and some are misses but it's nice to see fresh designs all the time. If the powerbox concept had a rounded cab like the powerwagon concept then it may not be to bad for the Dakota. I think they should round that powerbox concept up some for the Durango, like an old sedan delivery truck, or like a big 4x4 PT cruiser. I also really feel the current Dakota body stlye is going to be tough to beat, they based it on the redesigned Ram but they had more time to fine tune the minor lines to perfection.

Message: Below is a link to the Pic I posted back in 2001. It is
based on Dodges Powerbox concept SUV. I simply
chopped the top in Photoshop and added box rails. The
Powerbox concept was pre-Daimler so I don't think they
are going in this direction anymore.
Feel free to copy the image as the link will only be good
for a few days.

Message: The next Dakota will not be on the same platform as this Durango pictured. The next Dakota my share nothing but some powertrain stuff with the 2004 Durango, so nobody really knows what it will look like at this point, but I bet we'll see it at the same time, same show next year. Persoanlly I think that the 2004 Durango looks good, A Dakota something like that would be fine except that it would be a Ram not a Dakota because of the size.

Message: The 2004 dakota will be on the same platform as the Durango. Just like it is now. The new dakota will be one half inch wider and 4 inches longer. It will basically look like a smaller version of the ram as it does currently. I have a well placed source for this information.

Message: Maybe Harley Earl is passing you false info. Just kiddin. It's interesting. Have you guys noticed lately that there seems to be a trend forming to make vehicles scaled down versions of another within the same brand? For instance, the new Ford Explorer and Expedition. They are clones except for their size. Lincoln Navigator and Aviator are the same way. I saw a sketch of what the new Chevy Colorado is going to look like, and the article even mentioned, it looks exactly like a shrunken Silverado (ugly). Now we have this Dak that looks almost exactly like a small Ram. I wonder, or is it just me?

Message: i personally don t like the front end of the new rams. i think its wayyyyyy too big. it looks huge!!!! and i dont like the look of that new durango. i know its just a "concept" and might change a bit, but the front end is following the ram. and if they do the dakota along the same lines as the durango..it will be a mini-ram. which will not appeal to me. but thats just my opinion
i love the current styling of the dakota, thats why i just ordered a "03 club cab R/T

Message: I will agree that I like the current design for the Dakota. I think that the Dak is pretty close to perfect from a style standpoint. If they really want to address thing let them address interior trim material selection, head rests for front seat, quality control, paint issuse and NVH issues. I would rather they perfect the current design then try a new one. The vechile has all the right stuff it just needs better execaqution(sp). With this said I think the 2004 concept Dak looks better then most of the competitions concepts. They should also make the 5.7 Hemi and optional engine.
