Subject: Why a tach. on an automatic? IP: Logged
Message: Forgive me for being blunt, but why do people go off and spend a lot of time and money hooking up a tachometer to their otherwise stock automatic vehicles? I can see that if you put in another torque converter with a higher stall speed, then you use the tach to watch your launch rpm's.
Please enlighten me.

When you have someone who goes off and puts a 5" tach. on their automatic (usually come with one from the factory), I am not seeing the reasoning behind it.

Message: It has some use when towing to give you an idea if you should click the OD off to gain some rpm and get more torque.
That said, I believe manufactures do it to please buyers.People think it looks cool.
What else are they going to do with that big space, put in an equally useless clock, or maybe the gas gauge, a playstation perhaps? LOL

Message: Its a fad. Giant tach only adds 75 hp though. the real power is in the giant stickers all over your car. A nice tack in a manual is very nice though but unless your a midget and cant see the tack over the steering wheel i see no need for an automatic with a oversize tach.

Message: Well some times the big tack serves a purpose. If you have ever rode is a 13 sec or less car you would know that you can't take your eyes of the track for a second or you will be toast. So they put a big tach right where they can see while at the same time being able to keep their eyes on the track. You will see a ton of older automatics with the big tachs with a shift light...and you say why the shift light? Because a lot of older drag cars have manual valve bodies. Mow when you see a huge tach on a little automatic honda with a shift light that means they are just dumbs azzes.

And all this time I thought it was the Dale Earnhardt Jr. #8 license plate that made all those rednecks go faster.
I know that #3 license plate makes them hit the median wall on the interstate.

the comment about the #3 is just plain being a jackass though.
sorta like me saying...what kind of person has a handle like Obiewondakota? some pimply star wars geek? that prolly has a huge collection of dolls he plays with and loves star wars.prolly lives in his parents basement, is a complete fatasss, has no friends and just looks at this site to make himself feel intelligent, then looks at porno to compensate for is complete lack of a love life.
that might be classified as a jackass comment.

Message: Umm..you can manually shift most automatics, so a tach is necessary if you plan on shifting at the peak rpm.
I would also like to add that some of the fastest drag cars in the world are automatics, and yes they do have tachs.
Does a 17 second Honda Civic need a tach, probably not, but the ricers think they look cool anyways.

Message: This may not justify adding one, but more than once the factory tach has given me early warning of a tranny or TC problem that wasn't obvious enough to feel. And there was that bad TPS, couldn't feel or hear that either. Of course I wouldn't mind having oil temp and vacuum gauges too, but I don't need them. Some of us just like to have an array of visual indicators that might give a heads-up when something is starting to go south.

simply unplug the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes and reconnect.
"poof" no more light(for a little while anyways).
then again you could always pull the code and fix the problem that works too.

Message: A tach can be helpful to see if the tranny is slipping, if the O/D is engaged, if the lockup is engaged.
But the tach circuit board in our trucks draws 100 mA off the battery with the engine off, so beware if you park it for a couple of weeks. Pull the tach fuse or rewire the board so it runs off ignition alone. Chrysler dealers never found this problem when my brother owned my truck. He went through several batteries for no good reason.
