 Subject: 1990 4x4 3.90 gear swap - RWAL tone ring

Hi,
I'm plannning on installing 3.90 gears into my 1990 4x4 dakota and have been told that here is not enough room to install the RWAL brake tone ring.
The 3.90 rear axle gear came complete out of 1992 4x4 and it had RWAL. When I pulled the axle apart to change the bearings there is NO tone ring installed - so how does the RWAL brake work without it???
Has anyone done this swap before and if so what is the solution.

Clairification :
The complete rear axle with factory installed 3.90 gears came out of the '92 4x4 and did not have a tone ring installed.
