Subject: Brake and signal lights not working IP: Logged
Message: I have a problem with my 1993 Dakota that I'm hoping someone can help me with. My signal lights and brake lights stopped working and I can't find the problem. All my fuses are fine and it's not the multi-switch. I know because I bought a new one... I traced the left rear signal wire all the way back to the column. After disconnecting the harness, I put power to the wire and the light lit at the rear. That's why I figured it might be the multi-switch. I also checked all the fuses in the fuse block under the hood. I have power at the brake light switch. Any thoughts anyone? I'd appreciate any help I can get. If I don't solve the problem soon, I guess I'll have to cave and send it to the local dealer...

Message: sounds like your losing power somewhere from the fuseblock to the multiswitch
it doesnt seem to me that you would lose all of them at once though i think theres something messed up at the fuse block

Message: Refering to my book which is for 97-99 dakota ( i'm not sure if yours is exactly the same so use this only as a guide), Thr Battery feeds the fuse (20Amp), Then the Brake switch (should be located in brake pedal), Then the Junction block (splits to 3rd brake light and rear lights), then it feeds pin 14 of the multi function switch, the output of the switch is pin 15 for left turn and pin 12 for right turn. hope this will at least get you started. if I were to suspect anything I would look at the brake switch first before the multi function switch. Good Luck.

Message: Thanks to all that answered! Robert was on the right track, but a bad brake light switch was only half the problem. The other problem was a break in the lead from the 20 amp fuse in the fuse block under the hood that feeds my hazard lights. I didn't realize they weren't working. I guess I haven't used them in a long time. While cleaning the interior, I tripped the hazard switch, but didn't realize it. They didn't work because of the break in the lead, but because the switch was tripped, the multi-switch canceled out my signals! Once my signals stopped working, I started checking all my lights and found my brake lights didn't work either. That was because of the bad brake light switch, as Robert suggested. Weird sequence of events all coming together at once... Thanks again for everyone's input! I'll cancel my appointment at the local dealer tomorrow! But not without giving my brother some of the credit. He helped me debug the problems...

Message: I got a very interesting problem and would
appreciate a fourth, fifth or sixth party
perspective. I have a 94 Dodge Dakota and the
brake lights don't work. Today I worked on it with
my father and my grandpa who are stumped after
working on it all day. I have the Haynes book, but
didn't find it incredibly helpful. So I have
written what we tried.
List of problems solved...
Bought a replacement brake switch and tested it
power is getting to the brake switch
power is getting to the two contacts in the light
socket
flashers work
dome light works
all fuses check out under the dashboard and under
the hood
So first question is a clarification on how
exactly the two filament bulb works. When the
brakes are put on does it light up both filaments
or just increase the brightness of the single dome
filament?
Second question is does anyone have any
suggestions on other problems I might look at?
A third question would be if someone knows exactly
how the brake switch works and could suggest a
work around?
Thanks a ton!

Message: Wow I'm glad to see im not the only one with this
problem, But I'm still not seeing a reason as to
why my rear turn signals and brake lights arent
working (all of a sudden)on my 1998 Dodge Dakota
V6. The front turn signals work just fine. I've
read what folks here have had to say so I've
started with the fuses. They are all good and then
I went on to the brake light switch. They are only
$15 on ebay but I went to a local salvage yard and
got a one for a couple of bucks. The one I got is
from a Dodge INTREPID and it fits perfectly. After
putting the dodge intrepid brake light switch in I
now have my THIRD BRAKE LIGHT but still no turn
or brake lights. I'm cross referencing the
INTREPID B.L. switch now to see just how different
it is from the D.Dakota one. Maybe that's my
problem. I just dont want to spend the $15 and get
the same results.

Does anybody have any idea what might cause this?
Everything in the front works fine. I do have to blink my
blinkers manually so the front ones work though. My horn
also isnt working. Also today my windshield wipers stopped
working. All of my fuses are good. And I can hear my wiper
motor working they just aren't moving. Any ideas, please let
