Subject: Catalytic Converter?

I have been told that the cats on older Daks are very restrictive. Is this true? If so, I have also been told to cut it off to gain HP. Any comments or advice?

You didn't tell us how old your Dakota is. I suggest replacing it with a Random Tech converter. That way you can get a high flow cat and we can have fresh air too. Win-win situation.

'90 models probably weren't any worse than others but factory converters are somewhat restrictive generally speaking. A '90 model is probably due a change anyway. I believe Random Tech has a link on this site. Seems that they were ~$90 + installation.

I have a '92 Dakota Ext. Cab with 318 and auto transmission. I gutted the catalytic converter and installed Flowmaster exhaust and now MPG has dropped from 16 to 12.

Can anyone help?

GaryWayne, did you do anything to your intake when you changed your exhaust?
Intakes and exhausts should be done in tandem

I may have jumped the gun before... When I picked the truck up it was all HWY driving, since the exhaust work, its been mainly country and city roads. Plus, the gas guage seems to drop off fast at first, unlike any other vehicle I've ever owned. Anyway, over the weekend I did some HWY driving and got about 17 MPG.

The exhaust smells rich to me, but there is no abundance of black soot(?) in the tail pipe. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

I am still interested in increasing fuel economy and performance if possible, and on a tight budget, as I'll be back at school next month. Where should I start?

Thanks for the replys.
