I've always heard that a OPEN and SHORT, (liek really short) exhaust pipe allows cold air to suck back in (you hear it when you let off the gas) and stock valves could be damaged.

I've NEVER EVER EVER heard of having a stock full length pipe and removing the cat alone causing that problem.

Anyway. As far as changing the cat when it's still good. I'd say smash it with a ROCK (or a sledge hammer) and keep it. Tell them it broke when going off road so you replaced it :)

gerky, more than likely he over rev-ved teh motor one too many times and the valve train had enough. Open headers wont crack valves. It does help burn them though unless they were designed to be used on unrestricted motors anyways.

And as for cutting the cat out, if you live in an area that DOESNT do emissions testing, then the chance that you'd get caught is pretty much nil. But if you are, they wont pass you even if your vehicle does pass the tests without the cat. Also you are subject to a $2500 fine from teh EPA for removal of emissions equipment.

They have to prove you were the one that removed the cat. They can't just say ( Oh no cat! That will be 2500 bucks and thanks for shopping.)

And that proof merely consists of them looking back at past inspections, seeing that it passed before when you owned it and doesn't pass now, and since you're the owner before and after documenting a problem, they can and will fine you.

I just don't get why all you people try to do away with the catcon. It is NOT that restrictive. My truck flies and gets 21 mpg with an all-stock exhaust, including replacement OEM catcon. If yours doesn't, it's not the cat. Either you stomp the gas too much (in which case don't complain about gas mileage, DUH), or it's out of tune or has other problems that you should fix.

Ok,I will buy that if you live in the city. But,go to small town MO or OK or TN or someplace like that and crawl under some of those vehicles, you think some of those have cats on them.Nope!
Now when I tagged my truck where I used to live the inspection was. Make sure all lights work tires were good and the horn went beep beep.Oh and make sure the windsheild wasn't cracked. Did they look for a cat.Nope! Did they look for air tubes.Nope! They don't care if I have open headers,ok open headers that was a bit much. But you get the idea. egr system or an O-2 sensor.I was in a part of the state that did not require a smog test.
FYI, I never said I removed mine or want to remove it.Mine just happened to go bad and I replaced it.Although the jackasses in big city muffler shops want big money to replace a cat.Like $250+.That is chicken s''t. I went to small town USA and they did it for 35 bucks.
Sorry,I will climb off my soapbox now..lol
