ok i am very sorry to say anything bad about your dakotas guys. my brother bought one recently and said it had the 4.7 v-8 in it. i said hey we should race. well i have a 1998 jeep cherokee sport inline 6. (stock) my brother is a professional driver mind you and i beat him by several car lengths. granted i do like the dakota but im just sayin jeeps can beat dakotas along with v-6 mustangs, camaros, a bmw, porche, and a 2003 denali. just wait till i get the super chgarger guys. that saleen mustang is mine!
oh i also have a 1967 camaro ss and a 1972 firebird they could be faster but i figure 9 seconds on the 1/4 isnt too bad for a car that weighs 5000 pounds am i right?

Hey, don't ever count out a 4.0 HO. Back in the late 80's and early 90's it was labled the most powerful N/A I6. I don't remember the magazine, but it was either Car-n-Driver or Motor trend. The Cherokee is lighter than a Dakota also. Even the Grand Cherokee is lighter than a Dak.

I dont find it inconceivable that the jeep won, especially if the Dakota was anything other than a regular cab 4x4. The Dak is a heavy truck, the jeep is actually fairly light. Plus we got a Cherokee 4x4 in our government fleet and that in line 6 is a little torque monster.

i have driven some cherokees with the 4.0 and they were fast as hell... but i have also driven some that were sloooooooow.
something you gotta remember, some come with 2.XX gears while others have as high as 4.10 gears.

I HAVE A 93 JEEP WRANGLER AND A 90 DAKOTA V6 WITH 209225 MILES ON IT AND THERE IS NO COMPARISON IN POWER OR SPEED MY JEEP WOULDN'T HAVE A CHANCE AGAINST THE DAKOTA BUT THE JEEP IS FUN OFF ROAD AND GREAT FOR PLOWING SNOW

Most people here are referncing the gen3 dakota. It weighs about 500lbs more than the gen2. A Gen 1 weighs even less than a gen2. A gen1 would probably weigh less than a Cherokee. If your cherokee wasn't an HO and didn't have the right gears the Dakota would easily beat it. A late model HO Cherokee with 5spd manual and 3.92-4.11's is hard to beat with a 5.2 or 4.7l dakota auto w/3.55 gears. I know because I got beat by several 4.0 HO 5spd Cherokees when I had my 2001 RC 3.9L Dak.

You said your wrangler right? Well first off, we are talking about a cherokee not a wrangler, and we are talking about gen 3 daks, not gen 2's There is a pretty good chance your wrangler has a 4 banger in it. If that is the case a 4 cyl gen 2 would beat it. If you have a wrangler with a 4.0 in it, and you lose to a 3.9 powered dakota, you need to learn to drive!!!!! I'm guessing that the wrangler is a 5 speed, and the dak an automatic. Is that a safe bet???

I Would go with the 4.0 high out put its a powerhorse i had a cherokee that i traded in on the dakota , It was alot faster then my dakota! Then you look at the wrangler with the 4.0 its a dog, (Gears)

Personally, I see no point in putting money in either a dakota or a cherokee. I own a '77 Jeep pickup with a little under $10,000 invested TOTAL; including vehicle cost, and I'm happy to say it will eat your "daks" for lunch, in acceleration, top speed (seriuosly), towing, and rock crawling, along with camaros, mustangs, and ricers. And, it is much more reliable. I expect another 200,000 miles with minimal repair. I'm running a midly modified amc 401, and 4.11 gears, and a gear splitter to acheive my top speed. Plus, I get around 20 mpg on the highway thanks to the gear splitter. I can hit 140mph easily with plenty of room to go, but in a old Jeep it's scary as hell, way too scary to go any faster.
Dakota's are okay trucks, except that theirs millions of them, and millions more in the junkyard. Find me a Jeep in a junkyard that was put there because it actually quit running, instead of being wrecked. It won't be easy.

but did you really have to drag up an over a year old post to bash Dak's on this site? why don't you go to a jeep site and talk trash about dak's.

don't get me wrong, that 4.0I 6 is a strong motor, and very tourquey, but I have beat too many jeeps to say that it can't stand against a 4.7.
I beat a Jeep Cherokee Sport, he hung with me for like a second or two, but by the time I hit 3rd Gear, a pulled from him real fast, I mean REAL FAST.
when I say he hung with me, I mean he was already 2 - 3 car lengths behind me.
the other night a 4.0L Wrangler tried to run me, he even got a two second head start, and I dusted his ass too, he didn't want to try anything when the next light came up.
but, one jeep that hung with me, was a Grand Cherokee 5.9L Limited, now those will run a 15.4 - 15.5 in the 1/4, that race was undetermined, cause he was 3 car lengths behind me, in my lane, but he was hanging with me, I was giving that Dak all it had, and I was slowly getting away from it in 3rd.
I thought it would be interesting to post.

about that 4.0 beating daks with the v8 auto's in em...because i
beat my friends numerous times with my 3.9 auto !!
and he has a 2001 sport and some mods like cold air intake,
exhaust w/ no cat
