 Subject: 2000 Dakota overhead display

Does anyone have a 2000 kota with a overhead console display? I found one at a junk yard from a junked 2001 kota and I want to put it in mine where the "clip" is on mine. It fit just fine but the only problem is the wiring harness isnt there and I dont know if it will even work w/ the computer. The harness is still in the 2001 and I am going to get it. I just want to know if it will be compatible with my 2000. Anyone help?

From what I heard the 01+ consoles wont work in a 00 and lower models. Because the computer setup is totally different. You need to find a console out of a 00 and lower model with the wires for it to work.

I've got the junky "clip" also. Do i just rip the overhead console out and se if theres wires so I can do the swap easily?

Well, I called my boy at Dodge and he did some research for me. I didnt hear anything about the 01 console working with the 00 but he did tell me that it would be a HUGE pain in the ass and very expesive to rewire the cab for the new console. I guess you have to buy the entire headliner if you want the new wiring harness because the wiring harness is only sold attached to the headliner. Not only that, but you have to get all three sensors to go with the display. The junked Dak that I found didnt have all that stuff and it was the only one that I have seen that had this display. So it looks like it wont happen, especially if Anthony is right about them not being compatible with each other. It was a good idea at least.

Some of the older daks came with the overhead console all ready prewired. I know mine is and it's a 2000. I did a lot of homework on this, because I wanted to do the same thing as you. I came close to buying a console out of a 01, until I heard it wouldn't work.
To check if your dak is pre wired, look in the engine bay beside the air box, there might be a wire hanging there with a harness clip at the end. This would be for the temp sensor for the console.

I did mine myself using the search function on this board.
You really only need three wires, because the lighting wires are already there.
1st get the right console for your truck.
2nd use the existing lighting wires and splice them in with the lighting wires on the console.
3rd you will need to run three wires from the console down through the pillar. One is a 12v switched power wire, one is a ground, and the other goes to your data com port(purple/yellow wire) below the steering wheel.
You can find all this info right here by doing searches, someone even had the wiring diagram in an older post, I don't have it anymore or I would give it to you.
Its easier than it sounds, mine took me about 2 hours. Good luck

Here's a pic of the temp harness wire. This is located right in the corner where the airbox elbow is, behind the headlight.
With the temp sensor installed, it's mounted on the support between the rad and headlight is. Right where the rubber cover is that protects the A/C line.

I'm outta luck, none on mine, but our Durango has the overhead console w/computer and I couldnt find it on their either btw its a 98...maybe a more detialed pic?

Thanks for all the info guys. I will definitely take a look at it tonight. I think that I might just buy a display from Dodge. My boy usually gives me the Dodge "Family" discount on parts so it shouldnt be too much. Josh, I'm going to pass on your display for now. If it is way too much from the dealer I might hit you up later.
