Subject: Changing Tire sizes IP: Logged
Message: Appreciate some advice on changing tire sizes on my DAk. I currently have P205 55R 16s -- want to go to LT235 75R 15s.
I hoping to get a tire more suited for heavy loads that isn't quite as wide as the 55 series. I don't think this will change the tire height very much.
Also, what size rim width would I look for in the 15 inch size for a 235 75R? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Message: A 205/55-16 is only a ~25" tire. 235/75-15 is ~29".
Thats a pretty dinky tire, is that right or did you mistype that?
I believe that you would be looking for a 15x7" rim...don't know for sure though.
To calculate your metric tire height: Multiply section width (first number) by the sidewall ratio (second number as a percent) then double that (two sidewalls). Then multiply that by .03937 to convert to inches. No add your rim size.
Example 205/55-16:
205 * .55 = 112.75
112.75 * 2 = 225.5
225.5 * .03937 = 8.88
8.88 + 16 = 24.88 or roughly a 25" tire

Message: I think you are right, I have the size wrong on the 16 inch. Its the stock 6 lug alloy Dakota wheel with 16 inch tires, must be a P255 or something, because I measured its tire size height and it seemed about the same as my F150 with P235 15.
Thanks for the info. I don't anticipate a problem with the 15 inch rim going over the brakes. I think the Dakota uses a 15 as standard and the 16 is an upgrade. See any problems doing this?

Message: what yr dak do you have? i believe that DC upgraded the brakes in '03 to larger discs in front and disc in the rear. you may want to check that out before you purchase 15" rims.

Message: MStphens - without knowing your year, dadio is probably right on this. For example the upgrade to the 235/75/15 that would have come on my '00 is 31x10.5x15; not a 16" tire as you seem to think. Members have reported a problem fitting 15" wheels on Daks that came with 16" wheels due to brake clearance. If 15s will fit your truck, the 7" rim is best for the 235s, that's the combo I run for winter.
