Message: 1999 5.2L Dak SLT 60,000 miles. OK. Here's the story.
I changed the front brake pads and rotors myself a couple of weeks ago. I did not bleed the lines or disconnect the calipers in any way from the brake lines. I did notice a ton of rust (compared to the left)in the right front piston after removing the old pad. Seems like the piston is rusting out and may have eaten through at one spot near where it pushes on the pad. I decided it didn't look too critical, move on and reassemble the brakes.
All seemed nice until somewhere along a trip the next weekend I noticed this humming sound that goes away if I touch the brake pedal. Since the 60,000 mile maintenance schedule was due I decided to let the shop look into the problem in case I screwed anything up. They called me and said that I stripped the threads out on one of the bolts for the right front "knuckle" and a replacement one was needed ($220 used). Told me the whole caliper was being held on by one bolt only and was likely sitting at an angle until I pressed the brake pedal when she would true up to the rotor. It sounded feasible to me but I wondered how in the heck I could strip that thing out since I didn't remember any REAL difficulties when working on them ... other than some muscle needed on the ratchet to loosen nuts and such.
Back to the shop side of the story, the junk yard lost the used part before the shop guys got there and the shop decided to "Helio-Arc" some new threads into the hole instead so I didn't have to spend $550 on a new caliper mounting bracket (or steering knuckle, whatever it's called ... man I could sure use a picture of the part right about now).
I was driving the truck today and I think I heard the sound again. It sounds like a mid-tone hum with your mouth closed. But, I can't really tell where the sound is coming from. It goes away when you touch the brakes and comes back if you release them. If I'm going above 25mph you can't hear it at all. Does anybody have any ideas or information that can help me out before I get screwed by the next mechanic I try? I'm not having any luck locating this part on the internet so I have the replacement for future use.
Thank you so very much,
Ross

Message: So they used helicoil to fix a high stress bolt hole...might not have been the smartest thing to do, but oh well. What type of pads did they use? It sounds like the pad is still loose and rubs slightly(like rubbing a wet finger over top a wine glass rim) on the rotor.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: I put Wagner Thermoquiet pads on it. Loose pad huh? Might be either of the pads then with all that rust in the piston. I also rememeber it was a tough job to get the pad on the caliper opposite the piston because of those metal clips on the pad. How much you want to bet they were the ones who stripped the "knuckle" with their tools? What is that part's name anyway? I think I should find a replacement very soon.
